Kitchen Knife Set Recommendations
Looking at finally buying a good quality, long lasting set of knives for kitchen use. Unfortunately living in the northwest part of Iowa, there isn't much selection of shops to go out to and look at high quality sets and you can only do so much online.
 Leaning towards JA Henckels Professional S line, but welcome any recommendations. Once I kind of have an idea of brands and particular models, will make a trek to Omaha to find some shops to check them out. Thanks in advance for the help I really appreciate it.

We bought a set of Mundial knives not too long ago. They are working very well. They are sharp and feel good to use - I would recommend them.
My wife and I enjoy home cooking and after watching an episode of Good Eats about knives, this is the set we decided on - relativly cheap, made from the right kind of steel and featuring the selection of various knife-types we were likely to use. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00897063000P I can't comment much on longevity since we only had them for 6 months - but they feel as sharp now as when we got them.

what makes the Henckel's so good, is it just the sheer fact that they've been doing it so long?

I've used 'em for 30 years. Life long blades that keep an edge forever. Go ahead and try a few of the cheap ones. I always come back to Henckel. (designed and built restaurants in my first life).
