I'm proud of my school...

Starting yesterday, my school took up a collection to help the victims of Katrina. I go to a small school (+-450 kids) and as of 3:30 this afternoon, we've raised $13,395.72. I think it's pretty impressive for two days! It continues tomorrow and Friday, and a local radio station had a telethon and they broadcasted live from the cafeteria which helped raise some money. The donations are going to get a LOT bigger, though, because several parents have offered to match, double, or even triple what the school takes in and some have offered to match or double what their child's class raises. I think it's so nice to see people giving so much! Also, there are 16 families from my school who have immediate family members who have lost everything, so unless the donor specifies otherwise, the money will go directly to those families. One family has offered to pay for an apartment for a family to live in, and we are hosting several students from the affected areas, and the first one arrives tomorrow. Anyway, I just thought I'd share.

That's good stuff CJ. My work is matching 2 to 1 up to 10k per employee. People are really stepping up for the relief/recovery (I didn't expect them not to).

That's awesome, CJ - quite a collection for such a small school. My company is matching donations too... Great news for such a sad situation. I can't even begin to imagine what these people are going through...

Since I own the company, my end-of-year bonus will get eaten up by the match, but it's one year in the life. Nothing compared to those poor folks.

Just thought I'd let anyone who cared know:
We ended up raising over $30,000! We got a lot more money since I last posted about this, because several families (including mine) matched whatever their kid's class raised (my mom ended up paying a little over $7,000).. Also, we had a football game and the proceeds are going to Katrina victims, and there's a dance on Friday where the price of entrance is a minimum $5 donation, plus a toiletry item. Our school is going to try to become "sister schools" with a Catholic school in Louisiana, and we're going to give some of the money to them to help them get their school and community back on its feet. It's a good feeling!
