We don't get news reports locally on who voted for what, so I had to look it up to get some historical data for the 110th and 109th Congresses. I keep hearing about this habit of voting 'present', so I wanted to see. The votes are reported as Y, N, or Not Voting in this database. I suspect that Not Voting ties into the reported practice of voting 'present'.

It appears that Obama missed a lot of votes, a reported 45.9% in the last congress. Biden missed 30.8%. But McCain reportedly missed 64.1%. Hadn't heard that figure before.

Interesting that in the previous congress, Obama missed 1.7% of the votes, and McCain missed 9%. Guess that is what happens when you stop working at your day job and start trying to get your next job.

There is a full list of what they voted on, when they did not vote, etc. Pretty easy to find it.

I wouldn't presume to know, or to speak for 33 million citizens. I do think that US politics are seen as more conservative and right-wing on many issues, but to me the US parties don't follow those classic principles, they pick and choose.

It may be easier to understand against a framework of Canadian politics. Canadian issues relating to a woman's right to choose, health care, and so on would generally be seen as more liberal by many in the US. Having said that however, our current federal government (Conservative party) is on the right side of the spectrum on various issues, and they look poised to gain even more in our upcoming election.

In my province, the right of centre party is called the Liberals. The word doesn't have the same pejorative sense as it does in the US. The Social Democrats (NDP) are to the left of the Liberals here. The Greens are, well, a rather single-issue party.

I do think that Bush is generally not supported, at least among my circle. We tend to look on US politics with some interest, occasional bemusement, and sometimes outright incredulity.
