CPO vs. Used, but still under warranty...

Can someone tell me the difference between buying say a 1-2 year old BMW from a private seller as opposed to a 1-2 year old CPO BMW?

Tried the search and came up with nothing. If I missed a thread, please point me in the right direction.

My opin is that the "used from priv. seller" will carry with it: the
oem warranty, (better than CPO), and the orig. maintenance
coverage.

Thus, I would think the used from private seller is a tad "above"
a comparable CPO car.

Yeah, my main concern is which will be lower total cost and have the best warranty coverage?

Here is a more specific example;

A family member is looking for a 2007 3-series. So if they by used from a private seller, it will have 3 years or up to 50k miles on the original warranty. Then they will have the option to extend the warranty, which can be another 2 years or 50k, right?

From what I understand, the CPO warranty (2 years or 50k) kicks in after the original manufacturers warranty of 4 years or 50k miles expires, but from what I have read, it is not as comprehensive as the original marufacturers warranty or a typical extended warranty.

It seems like you would be better off buying from a private seller (no sales tax and typically lower price) and then buy an extended warranty yourself after 4 years or 50k miles, instead of paying the tax and dealer markup to CPO the car.

Does that sound about right, or am I missing something?

All things being about equal, I'd take the priv seller car...
Yes, my understanding of the CPO is it isn't quite as
comprehensive as the oem warranty.

However, the extended BMW warranty, O2P I think it's
called, is only offered for the Original Owner, so that
may throw a blip in your thinking as to the used car.

Hmmm, I was under the impression that as long as the car was still under the original manufacturers warranty, that the current (not just original) owner could extend the warranty.

When I was in the market for our X5 a few years back, I called BMW and specifically asked them if I were to buy from a private seller or a random dealership besides BMW would I be able to by a BMW extended warranty and from what I remember the answer was yes. Also, my buddy bought a used 2002 e46 M3 from private seller and was able to get an extended warranty through BMW.

Dunno...the OP2 wording sounds like "orig owner" to me...maybe BMW
and/or some stlrs are offering a way around it, or a 3rd party warranty.

I know at my dealer, as long as it is under factory warranty you can add extended... but not after the warranty expires. The same goes for the maintenance. I would just call the local dealer you would be using and confirm that.

Try to get the seller to buy the "original owners warranty extension"
FTW, IMO. Gives you FULL coverage (like the New Car W'ty) for 6/100.

The extended BMW warranty can only be purchased by the original buyer of the vehicle. Thus if private party looks to be the route, then ask if the seller is willing to purchase it before the sale.
