What to do in Hawaii (Maui+Oahu in the weekend) and Not to do?
Do you have any suggestions? It has been three years since my last trip. (I used to spend at least weeks there prior to 2005.) I will be kicking back in Maui but I am thinking about enjoying some city life in Honolulu. Honolulu has some crazy night life from what I recollect.

where are you staying? the Ritz-Carlton is super nice, as is Kapalua. playing the Plantation course at Kapalua was an unforgettable experience for me.
i went to a lua in Kaanapoli and while the show was cool, the food wasnt that great. just make sure you go early to get a seat near the front.

Jon,
How about a snorkel trip to Molokini off Maui? We've dived all sides of Molokini several times and it's sensational, but we have also done the snorkel trip with non-divers, inside the protected lagoon of Molokini crater, and it's pretty damn good. A thick "skin" or, 3 mm wetsuit, (probably rentalable from fading memory), would not hurt as the big Pacific is cold. Worth the half day, imo. GL,mD http://www.mauisnorkeling.net/snorkeltrips.html Not humping this outfit; just one of many I found in a quickie web search.

My parents live on Maui and I visit there frequently. Here are some recommendations:
1) The Road to Hana. It's a day long trip (depending on where you stay) but you get to see some of the most beautiful areas of Maui. If you can, pick up a tourist CD that will guide you on the road in your rental car. The cd's can be a little corny, but they also get you to stop at some amazing places (rain forests and such) that you might otherwise miss. 2) Eat at Mama's Fish House. It's expensive but worth it. It's where I got married and is fantastic views, food, etc. 3) Blue Hawaiin Helicopter tours are awesome, but pricey. The west Maui and Malakai tour was INSANE. -- One of the best things you can do on Maui is just get in a car and drive. You will find locals selling fresh fruit on the side of the road, coconut, banana bread, etc. Stop and smell the roses, eat the foods, it's healthy and delicious. 4) I found honolulu to be a bit boring. It was just like being in Los Angeles. Cheesecake factory, PF Changs, Bloomingdale's, etc. It's a good place if you want to go shopping or need activities/resort for kids. If you go to Oahu, go to the North Shore and watch people surf, it's awesome. Also, be sure to eat at the little mobile kitchen vans. They make shrimp dishes which are insanely good.

I am staying in small condo in Lahaina this time, yeah bad economies. Drive to Hana has been always adventurous. I know not to take a passenger who gets motion sickness w/ or w/o patches. 13 years ago I saw a beautiful naked lady standing butt-naked in front of her parked car on the road down to Hana. She acted like a deer in a headlight. I swear it was so true. I wanted to get off the car offer assistance, or at least confirm what I see, but I had a female companion who gets easily jealous, dang!!! It is funny that if you sit alone at a bar in Honolulu pretty much every where, even some Karaoke bars. Some ole hag will ask me to buy her a drink. If you do you are in surprise, because even cheap drink will cost you $40 and the business owner and the hag will slit the proceeding. I do have Honolulu local hotshot buddy, so if he's available I get a free pass to hot spots there. He got married a year ago, he might as well have been dead to me. I will need a contingency plan. I do have lots of fond memories in Hawaii everywhere, including few nights at Mousehead Bars...

I stayed there few time. I love their breakfast buffet, very fusion. According to the local that area used to be sacred forbidden place. It was interestingly spooky, only that spot always rains year around. Too bad I am not a golfer. I will do the biking down the load thing, if I am not so hung over. and snokling at Molokai. All the tourist things. I'll surf this time for sure.

If you are staying near Lahaina, you should try:
The Feast of Lele - luau. It's the best one I've been to and the food was amazing. It's more expensive than the Old Lahaina Luau but I also think it was much better. - The feast of Lele is table service vs. Old Lahaina which is buffet. Feast of lele is also much smaller, intimate.

Golf and Sushi at the Kapalua Course. Just above La Hanai, past Kaanapali on Maui.
