Detroit Free Press Suspends Daily Delivery...
combined with shrinking ad revs. For those of you that suggest "so what, I get all my info from Yahoo tidbits",the problem is the really good writers & journalists won't be sliding over to MSN/Yahoo news I don't think. I used to deliver the "FreeP" on those lonely early mornings, circa 1961-'63. There will more more consolidation, paper "shrinkage" and changes in the the newspaper biz; tough times are not going away any time soon, imo. BR,mD (Sorry for the ugly indentations and paragraph set-ups; this site occasionally prevents me from fixing posts, cosmetically. )Detroit Newspapers May Sharply Cut Home Delivery By RICHARD PÉREZ-PEÑA Published: December 12, 2008 The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News are planning to stop home delivery most days of the week and print a pared-down version of their papers for newsstands on those days, according to people briefed on the plans. They will be the first major dailies in the country to take such drastic steps. The papers will deliver to subscribers only on the most profitable days of the week — Sunday, and either Thursday or Friday or both, said these people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the changes and the decisions were not final. On other days, they will still print slimmer single-copy editions. The changes will be accompanied by staff cuts, these people said. Newspapers across the country are besieged by falling revenue, but the papers in Detroit, home of the struggling auto industry, face particularly grim prospects in the next year. ... http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/13/bu...ef=todayspaper

The day they stop printing newspapers will be a very sad one indeed. I still regularly read the morning paper over my breakfast when I'm at home. Sure, most of the stuff is politics and rubbish, but there's always a couple decent articles to read over morning toast and grits.
Then after finishing the newspaper, I turn on The Weather Channel. How's that for a habit? |

Enjoying the morning paper is a ritual for me - I still go to certain sites on the web and get google alerts etc., but the paper can't be replaced entirely in my mind.
