I'm sure he's a good kid and I think you made a great decision. Good luck!

Thank you for such thoughtful words..

I remember complaining to a business colleague about how much I was spending on my older son's college education..over $125K over 5 years. He replied that he WISHED he was spending his money on college instead of rehab for his son. It stuck with me to this day, and as long as my boys try hard, dont get in trouble, ie, no drinkin, drugs or babies, I'll do what I can. And he worked REALLY hard during the summer to save $5000, foregoing concerts with friends so that he could make his "nut". I beleve in responding in kind.

Your comments brought a smile to my face.. and I thank you !

I know a very good place that might do it for you, it's called Jefferson's Auto Body in Manhasset, NY (on Long Island). They do very very good work.I know it's not in NJ but I do trust them, they've worked on all of my cars that needed it.

you might want to try these guys:

They are worshipped by the vette guys and very reliable.

These guys are good and reliable too, they're in Wayne:

cobalt? manual windows? why did you match 1 to 1 with his saving and bought him a cobalt? you can walk out with a same config civic for only $2~3K more or same price with a corolla and they are way, way better than a cobalt.

haha I thought you had spent 15k +....you did really get a steal. And I mentioned safety because without side airbags that car is a death trap and with tendencies of those teenage drivers (but from what you've mentioned about your son it seems he is mature + responsible though) safer is better. I hope it has ABS too!

Any cool Cobalt "mods" like we have on our X5s? Watch out, he may just get bitten by the mod bug....

OK show me a Corolla for $10K with 10K on the clock, and then we'll talk..and the closest civic (you can see I bought the car at a Honda dealer) is in the $15-17K. I dont know where "way better" comes from.. Have you driven a Cobalt..? I was against it at first, but it's a tight little car, has lots of little features (like what percentage of oil is still useful), and gets 32 MPG, plus I dont need the extra insurance of a Civic (the most stolen car in america) and frankly I've driven enough Corollas at Hertz on business that if I never sat in another one it would be too soon. Plus the imperical evidence (Consumer reports, Edmunds, etc) all point to the Cobalt as a fine entry vehicle for a kid going to college. But hey if you want to send me a check for $5K I'll be happy to sell it any buy a Civic.

Plus I want some of that bail out money the American auto makers are getting in the form of warranty work and 5 years 100K on the powertrain is tough to beat unless you want a Hyundai.

But thanks for your comments.. I enjoy hearing other points of view that only make my decision feel even better..

Cheers my friend
Ed

Yep ABS brakes too..

No but I've been bitten HARD by the mod bug hence the original post to convert the manual windows and door locks to power. I just picked up a set of alloy wheels from a good guy in Virginia Beach, and ordered the Center Console that was also an option.. But these will be treats for a good report card, birthday, etc.. He's happy that he's got the Ipod plug in on the radio bezel!

I just called my local Chevy dealer and told him that I'd like to establish a "relationship" with him rather than drive 60 miles road trip to a Honda dealer. He was GREAT on the phone, told me to bring the car in with a days notice, they would do any "soft" recalls ie, nothing that will cause the brakes to lock up or the engine to catch fire...at no charge.

Now I'm debating if I should buy a GM Extended Warranty that picks up when this one is over, since they are planning a price increase and it doesnt BEGIN until the existing GM bumper to bumper end in Oct of 2010.
I like it because it has a ZERO deductible, no outside agency to haggle pricing with, and it's pretty reasonable..and if he goes to school in North Carolina (which he is strongly considering) he can bring it to ANY GM dealer (Chevy or otherwise) and they'll repair it with no out of pocket. Cost is about $1200 for 3 years 36K AFTER the existing b2b expires. Pls it's refundable (pro-rated of course) and transferable for $25 to a new owner.

And for a kid who doesnt know a ratchet from a ratshit, I'd prefer the peace of mind vs getting a call at 2 AM "Dad, the car wont start"

Thanks for kind words.. Yeah, I think we got a hell of a deal oh and if I hadnt mentioned it, they threw in a brand new Magellan Maestro GPS (which is much nicer than my 2 year old Garmin), plus $25 in Exxon gas cards, plus a T-shirt and a coffee mug AND they detailed the car before we picked it up.. For $10K..tell me how you can beat that deal..

At the end of the day, as long as he's happy...I'm happy !

We dont buy no rice burners.. (J/K)
It's BMWs, or an entry level American..
PS the Ford Edge was a REAL nice car but there werent any used ones.

Cheers

Try good student/good driver discounts. My insurance was quoted at 2400 a year as the primary on a volvo then my 325 and is 800 after two years of "good*" driving, but I realize nj can be less than awesome for INS. My friend had an ion that served him well, gl with the cobalt!

*good for someone raised in Boston by a new yorker.

Good first car and sounds like a helluva deal, Ed.
That ext warranty is quite enticing.
Hope your son and it, stay under a hundred and between the fences...
