TV Wonderment...

My knucklehead son has been drooling for his first HD TV...
I offered some opins and some fiscal advice, (what are fathers for?!),
and his urge faded...It arose again and he just bought this:

Sharp Aquos 46’’ LC46D85U 120Hz 1080p LCD HDTV with Sharp Aquos Blu Ray Player

The thin reviews I found of that TV are so-so...NE1 have an opin or
good link for reviews?
I realize it is ex post facto, but just curious.

Sharp's D series( D85 in your case) is supposed to be good as against their SB series ($hit Boxes). I believe its 120 Hz TV. Did he buy online?
Sharp also makes LCD panels for Sony's XBR line (Xtra Bucks Required)

LM, his is the 120 Hz and they threw in the Blue Ray...I wasn't trying to
2nd guess him, as we have been having HDTV discussions for 6 months.
But, like many sons do, when it gets to the other shoe dropping time, he
toddled off to BB or wherever, and just pulled the trig.

I was pitching other brands, but it's his deal. Course now he's out looking
for a stand, (his orig. tube TV is in a big furniture cabinet thing), cables,
etc. And, ComCrap ain't going to show up until about Wed next week, etc.
Add in his very, very low tech skills, (eg can hardly check his oil; maybe
he was switched out as a baby 38 yrs ago, ), and there is a recipe
for disaster and tears.

I still love my 60" Sony,NoBaloney SXRD here in the FL Starter Shack!

Kidz...even as fully grown up adults, they will drive the 'Rents crazy.

I bought a 52" LCD around Christmas for my home office.

After reading about the Sharp deals here, I did my research and surprised myself by purchasing a Samsung LN52A650 from Amazon for $1910 including white glove delivery. It was more expensive than the Sharps but the picture is significantly better and the blacks are better. AVSforum and other sites pointed to issues with the Sharps such as banding. As I wrote in another thread, I am not generally a big Sammy fan but this set has changed my opinion. It's CR's best 52" set too at 83/100 (rated above the more expensive Sony XBR6 (77) and all the plasmas they reviewed including a $5k Pioneer Elite (80)). The Sharp your son bought is rated at 73.

Don't think your son will have any problem with Sharp. I have D series and no problems at all with it. Sharp banding issues were pre-2007. Sharp has come a long way. I have suffered more than once on Samsucks products when they failed within first 60 days and I ended up with a refurbished unit. Plus Samsuck remotes are horrible and designed by some dumb team.

Dell had good deals on Sharp TVs early this week with up to $500 off on all TVs + blu-ray player. I guess they are not selling the blu-ray player.

As I wrote, I had a similar opinion of Samsung. However, for LCD TVs:

CR Brand reliability: 2% serious failure for Sharp; 3% for Samsung (+/- 3% are not significant to the survey rating)

CR Remote: Sharp: Very good; Samsung: Excellent.

The picture quality comparison is not close. Overall rating is ~25% lower for Sharp for 2008 models.
