"New" car options for me
Short version: The lease on our E90 330i is up in a couple of months are we're weighing our options. One style of vehicle we are considering is a wagon/touring/Avant/Estate. Okay, no matter what you call it, it's a station wagon. I get that and I know that some people don't like them. I've always liked the European interpretation of them. Anyway, we're trying to stay away from SUV's and think that the wagon platform would be practical for our lifestyle that includes one large Rottweiler.
We're also considering leasing a new vehicle but we think that with the current economy we would do much better buying a CPO. Prices are pretty good and dealers are having a hard time moving new units much less used ones. We're looking at 2006 because that seems to be the sweet spot. Plus BMW and M-B are offering great rates on '06's. The three choices in the poll are all about the same price point. (Around $30,000 +/-) So... votes please.

I say lease a new Audi Q5..
Here's the deal, when you finance a used car you are still financing a lot of money. That means higher monthly payments. And at the end of the finance you have a very old car which is hard to offload and certainly you won't be ahead of book value, probably $2500 behind book. So if you include the fact that you have to pay the entire sales tax on the vehicle rather than just the taxes on the vehicle you borrow, you also pay more. So unless you plan on keeping the car for 5-6 years and the car is a 2006 which means it's already 4 years old.. Save yourself the hassle. Lease a new car, have lower payments. Don't invest in a depreciating asset that will be near impossible to sell in 3-5 years with the risk of being upside down. Lease, get in, get out.. Just make sure you lease well. That's my opinion.

I love the new Q5. It's beautiful and wicked fun to drive. I'm thinking it may be the Treg's replacement when the lease is up.

E91 — much tighter than the E61, but maybe that'll be too small. Also consider (if you hate iDrive) you can get an E9x sans iDrive whereas all E6x's have iDrive whether you have navigation or not. |

Why no E91 (touring) on the list? Nice vehicle, and for the same price you could get newer/lower miles.
I would take the E61, but it only comes in the x version, perhaps that isn't an issue.

I have a E61 (535XIT) and love it, the power and handling is great, when you sit in the drivers seat you think you are in a sedan. I would suggest getting comfort seats. I went with the standard tires and wheels to avoid run flats. The power rear hatch with privacy cover works really nice.
The MB does not have the power of the BMW and just does not handle like a BMW. The A6 has a soft suspension and is about to be updated. Yes the 5 is also being updated but the current model is much better than the Audi. I never drove a 530 but the 535 has tons of power and the lease and purchase deals on new cars are quite good. The 2009 has a somewhat updated I Drive. The 5 got a mid cycle update in 2008 if I was buying used I would try to get a 08. Last edited by E61Silver; 04-05-2009 at 09:36 AM. |
