I dont get that. BMW basically took their V10 engine which won overall International Engine of the Year in 05 and 06 as well as best engine above 4.0 litres from 05-08, chopped 2 cylinders off and made it better in numerous ways. It's nothing to write home about? Really? That casual about it? Just another run of the mill, 8,400 RPM V8 I guess.

Ferrari motors are incredible power plants. No arguement there, but here are the criteria used for judging this contest;

In every category, the panelists judged each shortlisted engine using their subjective driving impressions and technical knowledge, and took into account characteristics such as fuel economy, smoothness, performance, noise and drivability.

Some of those are not Ferrari's strong points.

And that is without counting their motorcycle engines flat twin and 4il. They may not always be the more powerful (although the latest S1000RR is actually the most powerful 1000cc on the market) but they are powerful enough and last forever. The famous flying brick (4il) introduced in 1985 (750, 1000, 1100, 1150, 1200 and now 1300cc) is one of the most reliable motorcycle engine on the market.

Those BMW flat engines are fine for touring bikes, but they make for terrible handling.

Not anymore Vin and have not been for about a decade. The latest BMW RT bike models (flat twin based engine) have really good road handling now and they are amazingly light for their size. They are touring bikes though. Mine is not a flat twin but a 4il (K1200lt) and it has one of the best road handling bike I have rode to date. It is a real rail at any speed.

the v10 is horrible on gas mileage and the v8 is not that much better. My m5 got only about 150 miles if that on a tank. The V8 is also not very torquey. The twin turbo V8 is a much better design. Compact, light and much stronger internals.

Ferrari has gone direct injection and flat crank. The flat crank are known for reliability and optimized for power and at the same time torque off the line... and noise.. c'mon now.. the M5 and the m3 sound horrible. It's not one of those cars that will make you go holy sh!t...

twin scroll = international, catepillar,etc have been running those for years. The EVO has had twin scroll turbo since early 2000 in Japan. Direct injection... doesn't everybody have that now????

In the past 11 years, Japanese manufacturers have won the overall International Engine of the Year Award 4 times, so it's not like they haven't been represented.

Ummm, yeah, Ferrari is the bomb no doubt. But I have a feeling "bang for buck" enters the equation also. BMW seems to have a leg up in the under-$100K department. Plus, most of the categories being judged are below 5.0 litres and therefore Ferrari is not part of that (to the best of my knowledge).
