OT Help an X5er: Need an IBM used HDD for a Lenovo laptop

Hello felllow X5ers:
I am retiring at the end of this month from IBM, after nearly 35 years..(yeah I know how'd I do it?). I will have to return my ThinkPad T60 to my boss at that time. I have over 80 GBs of data that I dont want to try to move to another drive so I'm hoping someone here has upgraded their older drive (It doesnt matter what size in GB,MBs it is as long as it fits in the machine. In fact, it doesnt even have to work, I'l say "Hey it worked when I sent it !"

I've tried e-bay, craigslist, google, etc and the cheapest I found was $50 for a 10MB (what a set of stones) that will fit in the harddrive caddy.
I am willing to pay your shipping (parcel post or if you live local to Central NJ 08840 or within 25 miles I am willing to drive).

I dont mean to sound greedy but I am tapped out lately so I dont have much to offer other than good will, maybe a BMW USB Memory card, a meal..whatever).

The HONEST answer? I will take me forever. I even have a maxtor 200GB (actually it's my son's), and when I've tried to do a complete back up, I get error messages telling me my copy of Windows is bogus. Now THAT was a nightmare..

I also just dont have the time. I've got 2 weeks left in August, then I take the month of Sept off with my unused vacation and personal holidays + 2 days at Columbian Presebyterian for 4 more stents in my heart, and in the middle of all of this I have to contact my customers, do turn over calls, etc etc. So you are truly correct..in fact you may feel free to call me LAZY , but I'd rather have my working hard drive with all my financial planning stuff, my BMW stuff, my kids pictures, etc.,right where they are right now and not have to worry..but you do make a good point

So I have 2 guys who have said they have drives that they plan to send me..if only one comes through, I'll slap it in this T60, give it back to IBM, slide it into the well equipped IBM T61 I bought through the employee purchase program, and call it a day. Oh and I'm trying not to spend any money as I only have a month to work, and then I am on my pension..which isnt bad, but I also have a 17y0 (18 in a week) starting college, and even though we've saved..it's never enough..especially if he goes to Rutgers, where you need a second mortgage just for textbooks!

I've yet to pull up the specs on a T60 vs T61 but I suppose there are negligible differences. Maybe it's just as easy as literally going to intel.com, downloading the latest *Intel Chipset Info* and this will get you up and running ----with your old hard drive in your Tt61, but a wild hunch *without me looking at spec differences* tells me it will be much more than that.

Questions. Have you tried to do this yet. Take your HD from your T60, put it in your T61, but not only boot up fine, but also will it not nag you....will all the hardware/drivers be seamless (my hunch is that it won't) working as it should be.

Personally, IMO, aside from the HD drive, and granted transfer of apps is a bitch....
you will be better off IMO doing data transfer. You will need to get whatever apps you don't have on the T60 to the T61, but again, this is just one mans opinion having been in the the *IT field* and just see the other side of things....


I don't think the helpdesk jockey will care either way, but my suspecting hunch regardless is that swapping hard drives from your current computer to a different one is not as easy as you may think it is--- unless you are tech savy to make sure drivers, etc is all nice and dandy in Device Manager. If my last sentence did not make sense to you, then it's a good indicator that you may be well over you head if you plan to do the HD swap.
