Where were you September 20th, 1989 ?

On September 20th, 1989, Apple released the Macintosh Portable, the first true mobile Mac and a much-maligned machine. It didn’t sell well and is very rare today–not due to any particular design failure, but because the original price was a whopping $6,500-$7,300 ($11,288 to $12,677 in 2009 dollars). It wasn’t the only Mac to cost that much, but others in that price range offered top-of-the-line performance. The Portable was both too expensive and too underpowered to catch on. Its large size didn’t help, either.

Apple vastly improved upon the design two years later with the PowerBook 100, the first true Mac notebook. For now, though, it’s time to honor the design achievements of Apple’s first battery-powered computer.

Hmmm...that's a good question...I was counting the years and days when I would be leaving the military and start a real life. Now, I wished I would have stayed a little longer and avoided this real life...there's too much drama...

Well, it was a Wednesday so I was probably programming in Assembler language on an IBM XT (with a "green screen") -- that was the model with a hard disk. It was tough to develop business software with less than 640K of RAM to play in but we got it done...

Actually, I remember that year well as I was in San Francisco and it was just a month later that we had the Loma Prieta earthquake (6.9 on the Richter scale)...

Except for the fact that i was still in the City by the bay and
"a month later that we had the Loma Prieta earthquake",
I honestly have no clue where I was.

But it's hard to believe that technology had advanced
to the point illustrated in the picture.

I was Gen Sales Mgr of a small public co., being recruited to go to a private
company in the same industry. I had an old 512k Mac, which I seldom used,
or lugged around in its canvas "suitcase", and my secretary/admin had just
copped a new Mac II, if I recall the name properly; I remember her colleagues
were envious, but I had some pull. That 512k was the first and last Mac I
have ever owned...no dis to Mac lovers.

I was 42, heading for the new/last gig, before bailing in 2000.
