completely disagree. i'm not a war buff or anything, but this has brought many jobs and is the first ship to fully accommodate all the vehicles the marines use. unfortunately, and i mean unfortunately, it is a necessity in todays world. i say motor on over to somalia with this bad boy loaded up, that will keep the commercial cargo moving.

there are two more coming as well, the USS Somerset (LPD-25) and USS Arlington (LPD-24). (in memory of two of the other planes crash sites from 9/11)

It is truly ignorant to believe that ships of this nature are a waste of money given today's political geography. A little research will show that this is a multi-purpose platform that can serve a host of military/political needs around the world. By placing the footprint of the United States wherever and whenever we choose, we are more able to protect our democracy - even for those who may not agree. Simply seeing the USS New York should remind us all of what this Country means and appreciate those who serve.

Ships like this also play a vital role in disaster relief as was evident by the efforts of the US Navy and the US Marines following the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

I am not against military spending, just think that in today's world of air force and missiles a battle ship is of limited use.

The USS New York is not a battleship. It's an 'amphibious transport dock' designed to support amphibious landings. The last battleship commissioned by the US Navy was the USS Missouri in 1944. It was finally decommissioned in 1992.

I suppose you want us to only fight "clean" wars, right? Ones with only smart bombs, dropped on the 100% verified military targets. One where no non-combatants get hurt (even when the enemy hides among the non-combatants). modcat, sometimes you have to send in humans to kill people, and break things. That is reality.
