android and external usb devices

for the android folks... new hack coming your way very very very soon.

the usb port on the phone can host other devices. yes, that means you will be able to plug in usb keys, printers, cameras, external hard drives, anything that linux pc's can connect to when they are plugged in...

the motorola droid was just found to be working today. the hero has already gotten external hard drive working. the person who did it on the hero now has a phone with 80 gb storage LOL

hero status
Andrew de Quincey's livejournal

droid status
USB Host mode on Motorola Droid Chris Paget's Blog

this is truly presenting that android devices are literally full capable pc's in the palm of your hands

That is very cool! I'm not sure exactly if I will take advantage of it but the fact that it can be done is one of the reasons I love Android.

Weasel will become famous soon enough
I have the samsung monent droid and love it so far, but my main gripe is that sprint got cheap and blocked them from being used as a modem through USB tether since they use unlimited data plans... I'm waiting for that hack.

So, where does one go to find available hacks???

root your samsung droid and then install wifi tether. your droid acts as a wifi access point that your laptop/pc will connect to and then use it's 3g network for internet.

tons of websites and forums for the droid... just google and start reading...

one immediately use would be a true multimedia dock with usb speakers.. another is if you use this in the car, you now also have access to another storage unit with more music/movies... or even usb video out to a compatible moniter (intel has a usb driven monitor)

Yup. Like Hayaku suggested, rooting your Moment will allow you to use it as a modem for tethering and you can remove any Sprint bloatware you don't want. I removed Sprint Nascar, Footprints, and some other silly stuff I will never use.

See this link

I'm not sure what's out there for the Moment but I'm sure there are lots of mods. I am using a HTC Hero and even though it has a slower/older processor than the Moment, I have mine running faster than a Moment thanks to rooting and a few other mods.

Very cool. I'm thinking of getting a Milestone (Canadian version of the Droid) when my contract ends in the fall.
