Arenas suspended indefinitely by NBA (AP)

.........Gilbert Arenas indefinitely suspended by NBA - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

NEW YORK (AP)—Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas(notes) was suspended without pay by
NBA commissioner David Stern on Wednesday for behavior that made him “not currently fit to take the court.”

A day after Arenas was photographed before a game in Philadelphia pointing his index fingers,
as if they were guns, at his teammates, Stern warned the former All-Star that his conduct will
“ultimately result in a substantial suspension, and perhaps worse.”

With each game he misses, Arenas will lose about $147,200 of the $16.2 million he will earn
this season in the second of a six-year, $111 million contract. The punishment came on his 28th birthday.

Arenas is under investigation by federal and local authorities after admitting to bringing guns to the locker room.
Stern originally planned to wait to take action, but he tired of Arenas’ behavior.

I gotta be honest with you..I've been following this story as I follow most sports avidly...When this thing plays out and is fully investigated..I think Gil should be booted from the NBA period, forever..and I like him as a player. There can't be this kind of monkey business in pro-sports or any sports for that matter. Firearms aren't a joke. This wasn't funny.. There has to be a zero tolerence for this type of stuff or it won't end. A one year suspension without pay is what most people are saying..That to me is too lenient..It says that you can do this type of stuff and still be able to play in the league...NO. He's gotta go...

On the contrary "NOT" surprised
at the result of what he did.

The (wow) icon is my Just my way
of expressing amazement at what's going on in
people's heads and where society is
headed in general.

Of course, if the city of Washington, DC properly followed the US Constitution, which guarantees the right to keep and bear arms, this would be less of an issue, wouldn't it? It would then only be a matter of stupidity and poor taste in the workplace (which should still result in termination of Arenas), rather than some heinous "gun crime".

The fact that he made a stupid decision where no one was harmed shouldn't preclude him from the ability to earn a living in his chosen profession.

If you want to be alarmed about a sports star (albeit, minor) getting away with murder, look no farther than Donte Stallworth...

"Poor taste" is making on off-color remark or passing gas in someone's face.

"Menacing" on the other hand, is a crime.

I am all for the Second Amendment, but even under Second Amendment protections you are not allowed to brandish your weapon in a careless, joking manner at other people. Responsible gun owners on this Forum know that muzzle discipline and discreteness are critical aspects...which seem to have been thrown out the window by Arenas.

I believe an arrest may still be coming.

According to Wikipedia:

Menacing (in some states known as brandishing) is a violent crime in most state jurisdictions of the United States. Although the wording and degrees of offense vary slightly from state to state, the criminal act of menacing generally consists of displaying a weapon to a person with the intention of threatening them with bodily harm from said weapon.
It is distinct from other similar weapons-related crimes of violence such as "aggravated assault" or "assault with a deadly weapon" in that the charge of menacing requires neither an actual deadly weapon be displayed (any object wielded threateningly can be used to menace in many states), nor any actual physical contact. The display also need not be accompanied by a verbal threat; if the display of the weapon would cause a reasonable person to fear bodily harm from the perpetrator, the threat is considered to be implicit.
Degrees of offense range from a misdemeanor for first time offenders, to low to mid level felonies for offenders with a prior menacing charge.
