Yeah, I collect coins but not on purpose. Every night I add to my collection when I change my pants.

Suave, it is a very complex hobby/collecting/investing avocation...
Sorta like asking, "Hey, I've got $5Gs in my 401k in a money fund...what stocks should I buy?"

I could write a few pages, but in essence:
-if you wanna "dabble" or buy a few pieces to put away, buy Only NGC or PCGS graded coins, in their sleeve. Some argue that NGC is the Betamax of the coin grading biz, as PCGS has become more common and thus, maybe more pop. or accepted. Both are fine,imo.
-the US Mint has catchy stuff, (aka marketing), but unless you just like the offering(s), to hold and show your kid in 2020, don't expect to make much...the collectors gobble up the interesting ones, also, and they are seldom minted in very collectable, (small), quantities.
-figure out "what period", "type", denomination, quality (grade 60 or grade 67?!), and how much, you want to spend to start dabbling.
-Adding some really good stuff, and/or US Gold coins, in high graded pieces, could over time, be a "decent" investment.
-Coins, banknotes, et al, are quite cyclical, in terms of "value", which one(s) are hot/popular, etc. Pieces that were hot in the early '90s may not be appreciating at all, these days.
-unlike most stocks which can be purchased directly, almost All quality coins are sold through "dealers" of some kind...some are very helpful and legit, some are so-so. The bigger the ads, the higher the overhead...
-Do NOT ever buy because someone says this is "it", the price is going up tomorrow, etc., etc. No one on the fooking planet can guarantee you an "anticipated return". Dealers, even legit ones, buy at Stlr prices and sell to most of the public, at some price higher.

I dabble...my Father was a reknown collector/dealer in his retirement: specialized in a few areas, eg British Crown Colony coins & really old UK coins, foreign gold coins and he was one of the 50 best foreign bank note collectors on the planet. I have a C+ collection, acquired over the past few decades, though I have added very little, lately. I learned at theOl'Man's knee however, so I felt compelled to pass on some opins/knowledge.

-Pick up a couple of Coin Mags and give them a read.
