I have the 2004 and here's basically the thing. I'm sure the Germans were happy with the initial setup because it probably drives well on the Nürburgring and other tracks. Here in VA, the roads are generally well-paved and some of the mountain passes are a driver's heaven. The highways are also well-paved and well-maintained. And in these instances, I love my X3's suspension. It corners so flat and holds the line long after your stomach has detached from its mountings. At 88k miles (142tkm) it still never ceases to amaze me in the rare instance I drive like I'm driving a supercar down a mountain.

And then once in awhile, I drive to the Northeast. And then the rear of the car is constantly heaving up and down on the interstate, the car crunches with every expansion joint and pothole. I literally cringe and prepare for "severe turbulence" at any construction zone. Teeth fillings are shaken out, backs are broken, and complaints are heard loudly from the backseat. Honestly our 2006 325i sport rides plusher.

And thus is a big failing that many car companies, not just BMW, are guilty of. The car drives well in the country it's designed in. An American car absorbs potholes and imperfections in the city without complaint, but go around a bend at more than 60km/h and you quickly back off. A German car will go around bends flat and composed but it's never heard of a manhole cover or a pothole.

I am spoiled by how superb the 3 series is relative to the early X3s. The 3 series handles superbly without a punishing ride.

man that viper is fast, if the 2012 viper has dct then expect another 3-4 seconds off that time...hard to believe how slow the f430 scuderia is

Nice link- Is the ACR avail for purchase or for race only? I am amazed at how much steering correction is needed- ASC/DSC is obviously off- My time at Mid Ohio was much smoother (and much slower) driving an FWD ACURA.

Yeah, it's so off that DSC and TC are not even installed in the car Viper's have never had DSC or TC.

The acr-x is the non street legal version...It has forged pistons, a new set of air deflectors/fins on the bottom inside part of the front fascia for increased brake cooling, no cats, Mopar controller, the doors are hollow, headers, racing seat and many other "street" car items are not there...Just as a note of comparison, SCCA ran at Sebring, the GT1 cars were running in the 2:10 range...the ACR-X was running 2:06's it would have run away from the GT1 cars...Also At the Laguna Seca reveal in November, the standard ACR with production cup tires did a 1.33.9, a new track record. The ACR-X was 3 seconds faster. And with a day of setup BOTH cars would have been faster still...

Viper posts great numbers but is brutal to drive according to several pro drivers- no finess- just crude. As a street/part time track driver, I would never buy one but respect it's power.

Rumor has it that Toyota's Prius S (the "S" stands for "no brakeS") lapped that puppy in 7:20 flat.

I'll disagree with the 'no finess'. The car has such high limits that if the DRIVER does not have the finess, they end up spinning it and then describe it as crude.

So many Vipers are crashed within the first few days of ownership, it's amazing. They take a slow learning curve, and with no electro nannies to save you if you screw up...

I like this statement "The Viper does have stability control. Your left foot and your right foot, learn how to use them!"
