Today I got an appraisal for my 01 X5

In need of a bigger car I went to a Carmax place, looked at some cars and had my car appraised. It was a guy spinning a few times around the car, checking everything in and out. At one point he comes back smiling. He said "Mr.xxxx we can offer you $7k for your car". I was about to fall off my chair (I was in an office with some big windows that I could see outside).
7K for a 2001 X5 with 98k, premium sound, premium package, privacy windows and almost perfect? I asked the guy what if I come back in one year for a new appraisal will he offer me $3k? His reply was "if you're lucky". In the end I decided to drive it until it breaks in half and ask my wife to lose some weight (she has 100 pounds) and to stop complaining about the tide space on the rear seat when she stays with our kids.

Considering my '06 X5 with now 40K and warranty to 100 is worth 20, thats not bad.

I sincerely hope the end was a joke, otherwise you're looking for another car because she took the X from you.

Of course the end was a joke. And no, she didn't take my car. Actually she's never driven my car. She always says it's too big. She drives a e90 325i.
To be honest I really hoped to get more for the car. I guess I was wrong.

You know how parents always say there are starving children in Africa if kids are complaining about their food? ... If you were in Denmark your 01 would be worth 50-75.000 dollars and be a dream-car for all but the ultra rich - so you are actually driving a very expensive car and you should enjoy it

Actually I really enjoy driving it. I would have never considered a van (please stop laughing) over an X5 if it wouldn't be for the tide back seat (tide for two car seats and an adult). So far so good. Carmax made me change my mind.

7K is actually VERY good for an '01 considering my brother only got 4K (quoted from Carmax as well) for his 2000 ML with only 75K miles! He also decided to keep it until the wheels fall off.

Makes the $10,200 for my '01 3.0 with 76k miles seem good. haha

E61Silver is an unknown quantity at this point
I had a similar experience with a 1982 Celica, that had 80,000 miles on it.

The salesman said that no one wanted a high millage car and offered very little money.
We drove that car until my daughter was 4, another 3years.

The 01-03s without sport package are not saught after as much which also will decrease their value.

It's basically trade value that Carmax offers--they make it seem like you will get more than what you would get if you were to trade in at the dealer you are buying your car from. I have the exact same as you '01 and 98K miles--I have Sport, Premium, Climate and looks only a few years old. Best thing is to do Autotrader (you could get probably around $11K I bet). Problem is on a trade-in on cars with 100K miles dealers really don't care they will auction the car off--they won't give you too much for them.
