NEW YORK state TINT ticket, educate me
driving back from school this week on 81 south, im cruising along at 100, thank goodness for my V1 which picked up the cop behind the bushes. so i slow down to 65, as i pass him i see the dreaded brake lights go on and him turn around and pull me over the guy actually pulled me over ONLY because i had tinted windows, he even used the tint meter to measure how dark they were. He gave me a ticket and i need to send it in to see what the fine is (he says the judge decides) SO the main questions: 1. I'm not familiar with NY state laws, how much should i be expecting to pay? 2. is it even allowed to give me a ticket if it is a state law? i mean if hypothetically i was from florida (and you can drive with dark tints there) could they give me a tint ticket in NY? 3. I should plead guilty right? what a pain in the ass, but yes i still must congratulate my valentine one for saving me, again, and again, and again

I found this NY Times article, which says you need to de-tint or a fine of $150 or 30 days

How dark are your tints that he noticed it so quick? 20%? 5% (limo)?
NJ tint laws are the same as NY and I have 20% tints in the rear and 35% in the front. I have yet to be stopped. As far as your other question, I'm sure he is allowed to ticket you for it if you have NY plates. If you were hypothetically from Florida, then you'd need to show Florida registration and probably a Florida driver's license to escape the fine. I would plead guilty and be done with it since there's no points to worry about. |

The Times said it, so it must be true
I guess it might be the judge's decision. I haven't found anything on google that clearly states what the fine is.

I have NJ plates.. i just saw somebody on another forum sent in their ticket with a receipt from a tint shop showing the labor to remove the tints (he had the tint shop just write all of it but not actually do it)... He said it gets him out of fines all the time. would this be a bad idea?

The police are allowed to do it because it it is illegal. The amount is usually $85... which is the equivalent of the tints. IMO, it doesn't matter either way. The police probably ticketed you because he intended to catch you for speeding, but because you slowed down, he ticketed you for tints. NYC cops are pricks. However.... 30 days in jail for $85 isn't a bad idea either,

My bet is that he somehow knew that you had a radar detector and pull you over knowing that you had just gotten out of his trap.

Interesting story, Naz. If you have legit tints and if NJ/NY have the same
allowable light transmission, then the cop was doing an FU tix or, something is amiss. Also, if a FL registered car, (half of which have serious tints on all windows), drives through NY, then I wonder what happens. Either your tints are too dark, (for NJ or NY), or the cop was simply filling his daily "interaction quota", or something else...if it were my car and I know the tint to be legit I would pay it and forget it or, challenge it, but not get the tints removed. Your 35 front is illegal. New York State allows only 30% fronts.
