Crazy... that means that all my personal info is out there for the taking in yet another format. Just the copy machine at work has processed my license, SS#, bank account#, etc.

They don't really "save" the images... what happens is that the data isn't overwritten or scrubbed from the hard drive. If you were to look the normal way on the drive it would say 'empty', no files- but if you look for patterns of information directly on the media you will find snippets and blocks of old data that was never scrubbed. That is what they were showing.

If this is the clip I think it is, one of these companies now offers this as a $500 option! One of the copiers I saw (slected at random) was from a police department's sex crimes unit...just really astonishing the lack of security. I particularly liked the segment that shows them shipping a cargo container of old copiers to Asia...

Note to self: Hammer to drive when getting rid of old copier....

To re-use my take off on Andy Warhol's seminal line,
"sometime in the near future, anybody can find out everything about
anyone..."

Jes'wondering how many butt & "stuff" shots are on any given copier?

Gee, I miss the Office...

Ensure that your IT department/CIO has a solid set of General Computer Controls, specifically those relating to data security. "All drives get wiped before any equipment is disposed of" is a pretty basic rule. Now, if your co-workers are searching your copier for your expense reports you have a different problem.
