Test drove a mini with my mom last year (for her). Was slow as shit but then again it wasn't an s model or whatever. I assume we are talking with mods? Could a mini s really run with a 911 s on the track?

The Cooper S is decently faster than the base model, and then they have the JCWorks packages that have either a supercharger or turbocharger depending on year. Just like driving a base 328i then a 335i then an M3.

You probably drove the base model. The S has about 60 more horse power and hits 60 in 6.7 seconds (2 seconds faster than base). It is not about acceleration in this situation though. The Mini is good at keeping it's speed up through the corners because it handles pretty damn well. I would guess Mini has already done this test behind closed doors and/or knows what the 911 is capable of time-wise on that track. It really is a no-win situation for Porsche, but it is still good marketing on Mini's part.

The Cooper S is the one the challenge was issued on, according to the article. I don't agree that we are in M3 territory, though, or even 335 territory, but the analogy is a good one.

The base model Mini has a very similar power to weight ratio, and 0-62 time, as a 318i.
The Cooper S has a very similar power to weight ratio, and 0-62 time, as a 323.
The John Cooper Works has a power to weight ratio close to a 330, but a d 0-62 time very similar to a 328 (the 328 is only 0.2 seconds behind the JCW)

So, translating this, would it make sense to put a 323 sedan up against a 911S, even if it could corner as well as a Mini? Maybe in a parking lot course around traffic cones.

Edit: I wondered where the 911S would be on a power/weight competition here. Given that it has a curb weight less than the 318i noted above, and 385 hp, it would clobber the JCW version of the Mini, let alone the Cooper S, even with two spark plug wires disconnected (theoretically speaking....)

Yep, those models were just given for analogy... not for actual comparison.
