I had a large three car garage, and so I bought a Z4 to go with my X5. Problem I had was not using it enough, and paying ridiculous insurance rates ($2500-$3000 per year per vehicle) for that limited use. It wasn't the money so much, it just bugged me. I traded both, and bought a sporty car (535i, MT) so that I could have more fun with my daily driver. That led to needing a sport utility, so we bought an X3. The problem with a multi-purpose vehicle is that it really isn't as good at each function as a single purpose vehicle. Sort of like an adjustable wrench; it works, and if you only have one tool then it is handy, but it is by definition a compromise. I like the X3 and X5, but would likely never buy a performance version, as the same vehicle in a sedan configuration will outperform it. Another vote for more focused vehicles.
