Just seems like a really bad idea to me.

The article notes that the EPA isn't mandating it, but simply endorsing it as an alternative to current fuelds. There isn't a retail distribution infrastructure in place to handle an additional fuel type, so there is a suggestion that stations may remove their diesel pumps to offer this instead. Bet that will go down well.

Reminds me of the articles and Top Gear video I watched where it consumes amazing amount of resources to produce the batteries for all those tree hugging Priuses...in the long term, it does more damage than good.

I love how the article clearly says that engine 2007 and older will "maybe" suffer damage due to the extra corrosion in the fuel. Kind of reminds me of the early M60 engines that BMW had to recall due to our gasoline destroying the chemical treatment used on the cylinder walls. Thankfully I've got an ethanol free, premium only gas station between my house and the freeway onramp and it costs no more than the Chevron I pass to get to it.

I can't see how decreased emissions is beneficial when decreased gas mileage is the by-product of higher percentages of ethanol. I'm sure there is some percentage study out there weighing the pros vs cons, and another article to counter that one, but to what end. Either way, it sounds like it causes more problems than good.

Maybe this is the Part II of Cash for Clunkers...instead of offering incentives to trade-in your older car for one that is more fuel efficient, then pouring a chemical into the engine of your trade-in to destroy it, the government is now just taking steps in an effort to kill your engine slowly.
