Web Running Out of Addresses - WSJ.com

Basically, we're running out of IP Addresses, and switching to a new system. Our current routers cannot support this system, and guess who's selling new ones?

Investment opportunity? what do you think?

ipV6 has been around for years.

if you're on a windows vista or 7 machine go to a CMD prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

you'll see the ipv6 address.


but if you want to invest in cisco, go right ahead, but routers have supported ipv6 for years.

ahh i see, but dont u think that certain companies that are still running on XP, (which a lot are) will need to switch? i'm not very familiar with all this jargon--will people actually need to buy routers from cisco?

Cisco is one of many companies making switches and routers that support ipv6. Juniper networks is probably the 2nd biggest and Brocade.

Cisco just happens to have the market share but all big giants will fall hard.

No.

Almost every company in the world uses a 10.x.x.x ip scheme internally and only has a handful of "real" non 10.x.x.x addresses.

This has nothing to do with XP, I was just using Vista and Win7 as an example. OSX, Solaris, Linux, they all suppot ipv6, as do any routers manufactured in the last 5-10 years. And if they don't support it, an IOS upgrade should take care of it.

Are there exceptions? Sure. But I wouldn't expect an windfall in betting on cisco stock because of it.

funny, i'm running XP, so i went to command prompt and did ipconfig, no ipv6 for me, however, just did it on my friends comp with windows 7, and it showed up.

also, typed in www.v6.facebook.com on my computer, not found, but on his it went right to facebook. its time for a new OS!

The funny thing is that companies like HP, IBM, Cisco, AT&T, etc etc, all have what's called a CLASS A address (A.B.C.x) which is a shit load of addresses, meaning they own real addresses started from the left most octet, for example IBM owns every address in the 9.x.x.x address range, which is 16,277,214 IP addresses. If we're running out, the big companies need to surrender some subnets.
