I have a friend on Hokkaido, and a very good friend that ran Japan, Korea & Taiwan for me, back in the day, who is northeast of Tokyo...neither have responded. I hope they and their fams are ok. The news vids & pics look like a sci-fi flick. Very sad for all of those people.

Just heard from my Japanese distributor. He said that most public transportation in Tokyo was out of service and he had to walk 7 miles from work to home.

He wrote that he'd never felt a "shock" like that in his life but that all was well with him and his family. He said that there were quite a few aftershocks and his water heater keeps going off but he hopes things will return to normal in the city while the country deals with this major disaster.

These photos are some of the most enlightening I have seen to illustrate the extent of the damage. It is just unbelievable.

I was watching a story on ABC's national news about how immediately after the earthquake, people were working together to sort through the damage and how there has been no looting, people standing in orderly lines waiting for their turn to buy food, and people voluntarily going without to help others. They explained it as a Japanese philosophy of "being one". It is really humbling to see it in action in the face of utter devastation.

It reminded me of things that have happened here in the US and peoples' reaction to them. I thought about the Rodney King riots and the widespread looting, property damage, and attacks on people. I thought about Hurricane Katrina and the looting that took place even by so-called police officers, the rapes and murders in the Superdome, and the insurance and aid fraud that ensued. It all makes one think.

9.0 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown. This is the worst natural disaster in modern times. Haiti and Katrina pale in comparison.

Our culture in the US does not encourage civility. Never has, never will.

Definitely a sort of perfect storm that is just so massive it's hard to wrap my mind around. The photos are jaw dropping.

About lack of civility, you are too right on that and it's sad.
