Great post. It brings back memories of some long uncomfortable flights across the pond.

@ Belknap, Are they going to make use of the rail gun? The only downside I see with it is that it takes so much to run it that it can only really be mobile on a carrier... But throw some smart warheads w/guidance on it and it could be even more devastating! It would be somewhat useless if it were only line of sight kinda trajectory...

IMHO, I believe it will be used, but budget constraints might push the timetable back. Someone I know says that follow-on costs is yet to be determined due to stuff that needs refined. (think how welding can eat away at stuff). Production, handling, and storage of rounds should be cheaper/safer, though.

The rounds will certainly be safer to store, but when fighting enemies just on the other side of mountain ranges where a line-of-sight type projectile can't feasibly get to them... the uses are limited. Drones dropping smart ordinances is still the safer/more precise way to go at this time. But I do suspect them to make some nice smart/guided rounds for it in the future.

Naval surface guns can't get them there either. The rail gun is more of a replacement for them then it is for drones.
