Q: I think that you're at the 6 year old mark.

"Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Starting January 1, 2005, owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification. The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the department will indicate if a smog certification is required. If a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees. However, you will not receive your new registration or year sticker until the smog information has been received by DMV."

Yeah I knew it was coming. The Mrs. thought it was her 5 series. I let her rant for a few then I informed her it was mine. Relief on her part for now.

Thinking about it gave me pause though. The X went to the indy this AM for a Physical. You know Oil change, brake fluid change, check this, check that. Now add to that the registration fee, smog fee. Hope the indy doesn't find any additional problems.

Fixed income folks like myself gotta count them pennies while keeping up the facade of driving a Luxury SAV. If they cut my SS i might have to go out and get a beater.

One knows he/she is in Virginia when there are cars and pickups bleching smoke that's visible and can be smelled 3 blocks away.........no emissions in VA. However, most urbanised states do have emissions requirements for at least some of their counties so you'll have to do it or else risk an expired registration.

We have to do ours here every year which is a pain. Fortunately there's a place in the same parking lot at a car wash I go that charges $20 for a smog test and good car wash/vacuum.

QwkAg, I hear you on the fixed/eroding income deal.

I've come to self-appreciate being an older facade kind of guy myself, these past few years.

I have 2 beaters: an almost 10 yr old X, and a 9 1/2 yr old Vette.
