I'm going to get the air in my tires rotated!

I saw a full page ad in the newspaper from a major car dealership offering "specials". They have some big brands like Porsche, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lotus, Spyker, Land Rover, and Audi. I guess owners of such marques don't mind paying for having air in their tires "rotated". They probably pay for having their horn fluid topped up too. But hey, $64.95 is a bargain since it's normally a C note.

I had nitrogen in the X5 once. Pressure was MUCH more stable than traditional air. In fact, I never once had to have the nitrogen topped off. I also got over 40,000 miles out of some staggered size 19 Proxes without rotating.

Nitrogen is definitely better but $65??? Costco uses it as standard and don't charge more. My beef is with the dealer trying to sell this service for $65. I use that dealer for our Audi but now that I am off warranty I doubt I'll go back, especially with them pulling crap like this. I would think it should be done as a free service if you bring your car in for other service, or at least as a loss leader for free or $20 to get people to bring in their cars for potentially more expensive services.

I guess some consider it a premium service. It is typically about $100 in the places I have seen it. I paid about $100 when I got it 5 years ago. I wanted to try it out and I thought it would be better for my wife who drove our X at the time. She never pays as close attention to tire pressures as I typically do and I didn't want her to have a roll over due to low tire pressures. I figured the stability of the nitrogen couldn't hurt.

Nitrogen is better than wet air. Nitrogen is the same as dry air. Recall that air is mostly nitrogen (around 80%). I would never pay anything for nitrogen, as it encourages people not to check their tire pressures. And tires that develop a leak will leak whether they have 78% nitrogen (air) or 100% nitrogen, they don't care. Only way to find out is to use a tire pressure gauge regularly.

Good advice as always. That was the only time I got nitrogen. I have since purchased an air compressor and am sure to drain it after every use to eliminiate as much moisture as possible. I just knew the tire pressure wouldn't get checked as much as it should, so with nitrogen being more likely to remain stable than air from the average tire shop, I gave it a shot. It was impressively stable over the 40,000+ miles those tire were on the X. Much more so than good old free air.

We agree on this!

Nitrogen for tires is a total scam perpetuated by the companies that sell nitrogen concentrators... The sell these as a way for tire stores to eek out some profit now that tirerack and others have crushed competition.

First, all the so called benefts of nitrogen are marginal, AND are based on technical pure 99.99% N2.

Second, these concentrators can do no better than 94%.

Scam. The key is DRY air.

My dealer didn't charge for the N2 in the tires and as had been mentioned, Costco includes it for no charge. Pressure was very stable until I drove over the sheetrock screw. After that, not so much.

I agree, dry air is just as good as tire store N2.
