The amount of ambient light in your room and types of signal you will be feeding it (HD cable, upconverted DVD, etc) can affect which is better for you in your case. Have you checked out this post yet on AVS? http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=574829
Good luck with your decision. |

The display type isn't the only consideration. The software is just as important. Samsung is regarded as the leader in this area.
Plasma screens will not only burn in, but also fade and lose their color intensity in a few years. |

Hi B&D Calgary, is this still the case with current technology plasma's? I was looking at the Hitachi 42HDT52 set.

Actually the life of a plasma is rated at 60,000 hours, and only THEN does it lose *half* its brightness. So do the calculation as to how many hours a day you'll have the TV on and see what that calculates to in days
![]() Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Some good questions to ask are.... do you have windows behind where you will place the TV? Plasma does tend to have better blacks, but LCD is catching up fairly quickly. Better blacks represent better contrast ratios, better colors, and when you turn out the lights and watch a movie you will actually see black, not dark grey on your TV ![]() The Sony Bravia line is very impressive indeed, but as you noted, very pricey. You might be able to get away with a Enhanced Definition Plasma. At ~42" it's a nice deal. High Definition Plasmas in that size will run around ~$500 more. |

Like everyone says there's pros and cons for both. If you intend to play a lot of games on the TV then I would say get an LCD. If you're just watching TV programs and movies then get the HD plasma.

I'm no expert on this topic, but have been told by many people that the extended warranty is essential when buying a plasma, since they have a tendency to burn out quicker than normal TV's.

The 40" Sony Bravia (KDLV40XBR1) is on sale for $3,150 at your local Tweeter store (Sound Advice in Southeast Florida areas). The only problem is that it's been on back order for quite sometime now (next delivery is antipicated on 12/24). Circuit City has these for $3,499.99. If you can get Circuit City to match Tweeter's price, the actual price would actually be around $3,114 + sales tax (CC gives 110% of price difference).
