Best buy scanning drivers licenses to curb returns fraud

I was trying to return a product purchased 2 days earlier.
Cashier says....Can I see your license? I showed it to her.
Can you take it out? Why? I need to scan it.
Oh no you don't. I don't allow that. Now she's
miffed and I'm standing my ground. She calls a
Manager and with a smile he clears the return.

Trouble is this is legal..... WOW no more buying from best buy

presumed guilty!!! welcome to BigBrotherLand...

on the other hand, why not make the prices competitive? if not possible, then... this is capitalism (in Arnie's voice from the Red Heat)... we don't miss the sh!t cleaners that cleaned the manure after the horses on the public street... the market had no need for them.. there might not be need for Best Buy either...

I hate Worst Buy for many other reasons but this is just another one to the list. I do totally understand that they need to protect themselves, and the credit card companies, from fraud. It is all too easy to use a stolen credit card to buy some high dollar electronics so any additional diligence on the part of retailers is smart.

As far as requiring a DL for a return, if you have the receipt I'd tell them to pound sand if they want to scan it. It used to be that you had to fill in your info on the return receipt but that could allow you to put in 1234 Sesame Street if you want.

Easy solution: Don't shop at Worst Buy, for this and many other reasons.

Macy's caught me off guard once and scanned my DL and that was the last time I ever gave anyone my drivers license.
At best buy I was returning a $29.00 cable and had everything i needed for the return. In the end Best Buy pounded sand.

Why does BB scanning the license bother you?

Couple of things:

When your card is scanned everything that's on the front of the card: your name, address,
height, weight, and license number is accessed, including any other additional data.
Personally with security and personal data being used for any purpose deemed legit by
the company doing the scanning I don't feel I need to volunteer my information just because they say they want it.

Additionally, if returning an item requires scanning a drivers license then the store
should post that requirement and should say up front that it is a requirement rather
than saying "can I see your License?" and then taking it and doing so without asking.
As I previously stated I no longer allow anyone to handle my drivers license period.

As I reported to QwkAg on FB, I had a weird 'license scan request' a weekish ago at our local WorstBuy: I was purchasing a freakin single band router, ~$40, and slid my AX car through their CC machine.

The 9 buck an hr mouth breather asked for my DL, which I grumbled about and held out to him to view. He took and started to scan the sumbitch...I said you aren't gonna scan my DL. He said, "it is an occasional policy." I suggested firmly that on this occasion he can skip that occasional policy, as my DL has matched 'me', my AX card has about a $50G ceiling on it, and the AX card and my DL sigs match.

He said he would 'have to scan it'. I said I have never had that request at BB for any transaction. I requested a 'manager'. Mouth Breather said he was OTL. I said no scan. He said, no can buy. I left the router on the counter, told MB to go fook himself, and walked out.

This is a 3 yr old BB, in our little hillbillyheaven mtn town, with population that could not support a BB kiosk, let alone this BB store, and these azzholes wanna scan my DL for a $40 purchase? They are the next Radio Shack, but the jerk Board and shareholders just don't realize that, yet.
End of rant...thanks for listening.
GL, mD

Glad to see that there are others who stand up for themselves. For some reason most people completely fill in and turn over any form anyone puts in front of their face.

My policy for the past 20 years has been to enter only my name, address, ss#, and signature on any application I fill. They really don't need any employment, address, banking, or even credit history. All they really use to make credit decisions is your FICA score.

When a clerk says they need more information, I ask them nicely to run it as it is. In almost all cases, the application comes back approved. If it does not, then I will go down the street to a competitor where it will be accepted.

When you give over anything they ask for, you are just telling them it is okay in the future to demand more.
