Spartanburg County-based BMW Manufacturing Co. announced Thursday that it had another record year for production in 2012.

The local plant, which is the production hub for the German automaker's Sport Activity Vehicles, including the X3, X5, X6 and soon to be X4, manufactured 301,519 vehicles last year.

That number represents a 9 percent increase over the 276,065 vehicles it produced in 2011, and it signifies the highest annual production volume since the plant's inception in 1993.

“Our associates are very committed to building quality products for the world,” said Josef Kerscher, president of BMW Manufacturing Co. “Our customers recognize that and are responding positively. In order to sustain our success, we must continue to be flexible and competitive.”

Last January, the company announced it would invest $900 million in the plant to create 1,000 jobs, add 1.6 million square feet of new manufacturing space and add the X4 to its production, increasing the plant's overall volume to 350,000 vehicles per year.

The expansion encompasses a number of construction projects that are under way at the plant. Those projects include a 170,000-square-foot body shop expansion, a new 300,000-square-foot body shop, a 650,000-square-foot paint shop, approximately 400,000 square feet of new logistics and warehouse space, and several on-site modifications to existing facilities.

BMW said the plant builds more than 1,000 vehicles a day and exports 70 percent of its production to more than 130 markets worldwide.

“The expansion and improvements being made to the plant site represent nearly 500 construction jobs,” Kerscher said. “The work being done today ensures the continued success of this plant well into the future.”

BMW Group has invested nearly $5.8 billion in the Spartanburg facility to date.

Earlier this month, BMW of North America reported its best ever sales year with nearly 350,000 vehicles sold in 2012.

Vehicle models produced in Spartanburg accounted for nearly 31 percent of all BMW brand sales in the U.S., according to the company.

X5SND is on a distinguished road
Holy, astronomical figures batman.
Some of those figures are hard to wrap your head around, but then again, a production capacity of over 1000 vehicles a day kind of puts things back into perspective. Impressive.
