Best way to sell my X?

Greetings
My X5 is truly a beauty. It is an 06 3.0 and has 73K miles with every option except auto-leveling feature (whatever that's called). But after 7 years I am a little bored so I went car shopping today.

I visited dealers all over NJ from Central to North, and the trade in values were all over the map as high as $15K on a brand new X3 to a low of $10K on a 2011 X5.

Note to Mods: I am NOT trying to sell it here, just looking for advice.

So I'm considering the following in no particular order:
Autotrader.com
Craigslist
eBay
Here on XOutpost (although I think everyone here already owns one)

Can I get some feedback please on what has worked for YOU? I am honestly terrified of scammers stealing my title or trying to anyway.

Thanks
ed in NJ

Do you belong to CCA? You can list it both on line and in the monthly magazine, the Roundel, at no charge. If you don't belong, than join.

Next is CL, again at no cost. I wouldn't worry about scammers, don't accept texting, phone calls only, and screen as you would any other potential buyer.

I have used Craigslist without issues. Easy and cheap. Autotrader is overrun with dealers around here. Kijiji is popular but I haven't used it.

Don't understand why you would ask here. This isn't an X5 question. What works in your neighbourhood? Ask locally.

In my opinion, it is a question for the The Lounge. You are right. It's not an X5 question per se, but since we are all automobile-philes, and have bought and sold at least ONE X5 to be here, I would say it's a good place to pose a question.

Of course, since I noticed you are in Canada, perhaps that would cause you to think more globally than I intended. Never heard of Kijiji before, so that's a good thing for me to look up for the next time.

Kijiji is ebay classifieds. Only operates in some US cities, apparently. In Canada, some locations see more Craigslist traffic, while in other cities it is all Kijiji. Same idea.

You mention being worried that someone will steal your title. I don't know how that happens but I am also not clear how you transfer title where you live. Here, we sign it over after receiving payment. Anybody asks for a copy of it before then, they don't get it. The risk isn't the title here, it is actually receiving payment. My practice is to require a bank draft made out to me, not by the purchaser but by his bank. I go with him to his bank, they make out a bank draft (cashier cheque) to me, I sign the title over. Takes minutes. His cheque can't bounce, since I don't have his cheque, I have the bank's cheque. Out of courtesy, I have gone to the motor vehicle licensing and insurance office down the street after signing over the title, together with the purchaser, so he can complete everything. They don't need me, but it can speed things up. Then we swap the plates, and we are done.

Yes, been a member of BMW CCA for nearly 10 years. Forgot all about listing it online and in roundel, although I still think that trying to sell a BMW to people who already have a BMW seems a stretch.

But good advice, and I shall take it...

Thanks again

EDCO;

I believe the point may be based on the question you asked.
"Can I get some feedback please on what has worked for YOU?"
If a person has sold their X no doubt they may be long gone from
this site and not around to answer your question. That would make
for slim pickens in the advice dept.

Aside from that put a sign on it with your phone number and park it
front of your house.

Regards
B&R

Put it on all of the BMW forums (here, Bimmerfest, BimmerForums, etc) with a lot of pics inside, outside and under the hood. Include contact information because not everyone watching the forums has PM access. Set up a separate email for this - like [email protected] or something similarly useful that you can shut down once sold.

Craigslist if you are in a good metro area, but probably not much value if in a smaller town. Autotrader always worked well for me. Cars.com hasn't been very good, never tried the other sites. YMMV of course.

Thanks for all the feedback.
I was able to get the dealer to come up closer to what I needed on the trade in value. I paid for a day of Galves and was able to prove that I should get what I asked for originally.
In the end its all a gang of "chicken". You want something to buy, they have something to sell. Whoever blinks first loses the upper hand.

So I need to change my picture from an 06 to an 11 X5.
