Don't have one in any of the cars...have a few of the halon variety in both houses.
Have never used/needed one in all this time, in my house or while driving.

Maybe I should get one, or...

Class ABC, 2 lb, back when I carried one in a personal vehicle as a work requirement. Haven't carried one in the car for years. We do have one near the kitchen.

MD,

This fire extinguisher thing peaked my interest after seeing and hearing about
others coming to the aid of distressed motorists. So doing research I found out
that ABC extinguishers when used on a vehicle can destroy everything the
propellent touches. Electronics, paint and on and on..

Turns out though very expensive HALON is the name of the game. However Halon is being
phased out and a HALON type of extinguisher is being used these days.

So far this is what I found.

QwkAg...
Yes, I like Halon, and we have a couple in each house, though I have never used them, so no first hand experience. Ours are smallish, like a double jumbo can of Fabreze maybe, but I have them.

As for carrying one in the car, I just never thought much about it or cared...

If I saw a car on fire with people in it, I would judge carefully, and of course try to extricate them if I could, but I am not a fireman and don't feel the need to try and be one. If the fire is that bad, a FE may not work...it depends on the situ and the hand of fate, imo.
And, that situ has never presented itself to me in my 67 yrs on the planet.

Sort of like a special UFO camera, for when one appears.

I supplied automatic Halon fire suppression systems as part of supply contracts for electrical power generation plants in the late eighties and early nineties. It wasn't our core business, we used contractors for that portion. Halon became illegal around that time. While there are ways to use existing Halon, and there are Halon substitutes, I would stay away from them myself. Yes, a chemical extinguisher can damage a vehicle. So can fire. The usual goal is to get the occupants out IMO, not to minimize damage to the vehicle. It will often be a write off in any case. And who wants to run up to a burning vehicle with only a 2 lb extinguisher in hand?

Minimax (2 kg, ABC powder) with BMW mounting bracket on the driver's seat.

Regardless of brand, automotive on-board types are either ABC or BC, typically 1 or 2 kg.

I've kept one in nearly all of my cars over the years. I slowed down an under hood fire years ago, in time for the fire department to arrive and fully stop the fire. Car was a write-off but the owner realized that he was fine and that the danger was minimized.

Unfortunately very few countries require this (Belgium still does, UK did many years ago, not required in our very safety conscious Switzerland). I know that somewhere, sometime, that I'll help someone who doesn't have one.

Great comments all. Here's a page with a video on the left side of the page
under the click to enlarge link. Yep I know marketing and advertising has much to do with selling a product.
However; if this product works as the video shows by helping someone including ourselves
without destroying engine components. it seems to me that the results would be a game changer and worth the price.
