BMW has always given electronics very low respect- from their steadfast reliance on German companies who did not have 'best in class' capabilities, to 'low bid' navigation and car electronics/entertainment systems.
IMO, their DNA views this stuff as a 'necessary evil', and they simply do not give this all the attention it requires. Their failings with all things electronic- from comfort access systems that open windows and sunroofs in the rain on their own, to nav systems that are woefully inadequate, all step from an organization fault. But, then again, maybe just bad luck. |

^^^ Same thoughts here, as I read the art that Quicksilver posted...
From cursory reading, many car systems are 'undefended' and hackable, though BMW's porous system is of very little surprise, imo.

Personally, it doesn't bother me too much. I don't want navigation systems in my cars. Cars designed and built on a seven year release cycle will never be current with advances in electronics. I don't want cameras, front or rear or side. I don't want HUD, or active cruise. I want a basic stereo, with speakers on the left and the right. I am happy with two zone AC (not four), but that is about it. Memory seats are good, but I would be fine with leaving all those other preference items off the program. I have had comfort access, and used it, but wouldn't pay more for it, trading off convenience for reliability. I suspect that I would be welcomed with open arms by the bespoke BMW engineer who agrees with my priorities (even though I am in the minority).

I suppose the point is hacking technology is only going to get worse until
the industry makes it up in their mind to get better about Cyber security. The auto industry will put their heads in the sand until some jerk in china decides to play games and take over someones car killing them and others..

Would not be at all surprised if car hacking was used in the Hasting "accident".
This guy did a story that took down US Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal. He was working an NSA/CIA story that was going to out several high level officials, his family/friends were being questioned/abducted/harassed by NSA/CIA agents (after Hastings death, the NSA/CIA denied ever talking to anyone!!!). He sent emails to several friends stating things were getting too hot, and was going "off the grid/underground" until he finished his investigation/story. One day later, his new MB crashes (single vehicle accident), the official police report stated high speed/lost control/impact with a tree. Tree was TOTALLY undamaged, vehicle shows damage inconsistent with tree impact, engine/trans was around 150ft BEHIND where car came to rest on the tree. Conspiracy theories abound over Michael Hastings death - NY Daily News https://video.search.yahoo.com/video...aoffblock&tt=b Don't think for a minute if it can be hacked, the US government won't use it.
