I think it's funny and at the same time very out of the box. What would happen if people couldn't divorce? All this talk about "protecting marriage" I for one welcome it. I think it would be great! If you are going to get married you should stay married, it's not some 2 year hitch. Imagine what it would be like, really gets you thinking...

Kind of reminds me of the embrionic stem cell research issue that the right was pushing. They said the reason they opposed it was because they opposed the destruction of live embryos, yet not one of the conservative politicians spoke out against in vitro fertilization -- a procedure which destroys a thousand times more embryos than stem cell research each year. Can we say "hypocritical"?

I have lived in a country without a divorce law (Chile). It doesn't protect marriage in any sense. It has a huge negative impact on half of the people involved in marriages that break up. Marriages still break up, but now there is no legally enforced child support, no spousal support, no rights for those abandoned. You can't legislate fidelity, or people staying together, so it ends up being a false security.

I know your post is in jest but...

It's easy to say when you're not in a miserable situation. I thought the same thing in 1986. Fast forward 20 years. I took the words "Till death do us part" very seriously. Not everyone that gets divorced went into something thinking they could just bail if it didn't work.
