SOPA & PIPA...
Some of the semi-philosophical points seldom get addressed by the headline grabbing rants and 'save the Internet' banners, and the usual TV news sources are almost laughable in their scant coverage. Some very smart people on this Board; anyone have any opins or thoughts? BR, mD

I'm 100% against SOPA and PIPA. I believe in a free internet and the laws as written would do severe damage to the internet as we know it

It's pretty frightening. It empowers the entertainment and music industries to use the government as their attack dog. They make a claim that someone or some website is infringing on copyrighted material and the onus is then put on the person or website to defend itself and prove that the materials are not copyrighted. That's just one example.
It WILL chill free speech, it WILL inhibit the free exchange of information, it WILL result in tyranny.

The Texas Congressman whose proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) prompted dozens of websites to go dark or run protest messages this week said Friday he is pulling the measure from consideration “until there is wider agreement on a solution.”
“I have heard from the critics and I take seriously their concerns regarding proposed legislation to address the problem of online piracy,” U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, a Republican from Texas and the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told Reuters in a telephone interview. “It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products,” Smith said. Otoh, if an offshore, (or US based), website offers movies, music, any copyrighted material, what is to be done to contain/curtail that common situ?
The orig intent, from my reading on the topic, and trying to interpret the bill(s) was to provide for legal pressure on any site, legit or otherwise, that support, list, click to, allow for the easy access to those sites that simply don't seem to give a damn about copyright material or intellectual property. The bill then got passed around, worked over by the K Street lobbyists, literally 'written' by interested/lobbying parties' staffs, and evolved to being a boiler plate, draconian nightmare. Back at the Everything is Free & Fook the Copyright Laws Ranch, the orig intent is diluted, and nearly unenforceable without the 20 lb sledge hammer of banging on any/every site that ever allows or lets 'copyright/intellectual material' be 'used/viewed', and we have those two proposed pieces of Congressional Crap, (that phrase may be redundant.) But, does no none else wonder, or care, about copyrights? Not pimping for Hollywood or TV, or all the interconnected media giants we have today, and all of us often use referral links on articles, and related 'entertainment', but curbing that kind of 'use' was never the original intent...thus, the PIPA/SOPA bills were developed and incubated through the typical congressional process, going way overboard and with basically building a large claymore mine, when they really wanted a laser beam...and the reaction was as expected. The next version(s) will be diluted, rearranged, and tossed up again at the scoreboard, but the basic copyright infringement abuse issue, esp by offshore pirates, is not going to go away, nor should it, imo. GL, mD

I find it shocking that our government is arresting people half way around the world for copy right infringement...
Is some cases these countries don't even have such laws, yet their citizens are punished based on the laws here...what is worse is that their own countries are letting this happen as well. I remembered reading an article where a few british citizens were extradited to US because they broke a law which does not exist in the UK but it does in US... Thats just wrong
