$33B in foreign assistance
source: ForeignAssistance.gov the US population is roughly 300 million people... so it is only $110 per person that is being blown on someone else's needs, and not on this country... and then I hear those commercials on TV - $1 provides a hot meal to an underpriviliged kid in the US... so many kids in the US can't have food on their tables... families in the US struggle... do not distribute wealth, let them people on welfare earn their food... blah-blah-blah... so, I feel bad for a kid in Africa who is starving - but, should I feel bad for that kid at the expense of the kid in the US? for some reason, I think $30B can do a lot of good here, in the US... Opinions? PS and no, I am not on welfare, but nobody is ensured against a strike of a bad luck or a bad thing happening to them - look at Petraeus and Amstrong, if they could have fallen from the grace, anyone could - you are guilty if you are investigated...

better yet - not feeding the anyone, here or there... why should i worry about their military, or their economy - when i have our military and our economy to worry about... i understand the helping hand for the neighbor - if my house is in order... otherwise... fix the home, and then worry about them...

Here's one opinion as to where the money goes.
U.S. Foreign Aid By Country Making Sense Of U.S. Foreign Aid To Egypt And Elsewhere - Forbes My question is simple. Since it is evident that some don't agree with this distribution of funds then please explain how you bring it to an end and what the result of doing so would be. An even bigger question is if one doesn't agree with it what exactly can any of us do about it? My guess is nothing.....

ok... we can't really do anything... but still.. if those countries "need" the money, why do we have to BORROW $30B a year and hand it over to them, when they can borrow the money directly and have the use of it...
one can do charity when one is truly well off - but if he has to borrow money to sustain his way of life, he is not really that well off, and handing hand outs is plain stupid... i understand, that $30B is not going to improve our debt situation but - this money can do a lot of good (and bad!!) domestically!!! just venting...

The comments above make it sound like it is a charitable donation.
It is an instrument of foreign policy. It comes with lots of strings attached. It shouldn't be compared to the cost of feeding the hungry, it should be compared to other ways of influencing foreign policy, wars among them. Out of interest, I looked up my country as a comparison. On a per capita basis, Canada spends 50% more. That isn't good or bad, I just found it interesting.

I would agree that it is not "aid" so much as "bribery" and "leverage". It does stink to know that the US provides so much financial aid to a country like Egypt only to have their leader collude with elements that act against the US. It raises the question of whether the money is being used to proper effect. Specifically, if the billions are meant to buy Egypt's loyalty or cooperation then why is the spigot not turned off when they don't play nice? Sort of defies the purpose of bribing someone if you don't get your desired result.

we used to pay a lot of money to palestinians (less than we paid to israel, but still, a lot)...free money has spoiled the palestinians beyond repair - since they can't really find a meaningful job in the territories, and working in israel is like illegal immigrants working here at the plantations, they got used to handouts...
when hamas came to power, we stopped givng them free money, in hopes that they will oust the new leaders - it did not happen, but somehow, they did not perish without our money, they are still around... they hate us more, but they hated us before too, when we gave them money for nothing... it is their way of life, let them be... but without my money... when we fight in iraq, or kuwait, i understand, there is oil... when we ignore darfur and get involved in bosnia very late, i understand, there is no oil... but why are we involved in israel and its nasty neighbors? they had their problems long before we were around, even before Columbus set sail for the Indies, and i am sure, they will have problems for long time to come... let them sort it out... and once they do, let them join the rest of the civilized world... what really gets me, is the fact that we are crying that we have no money, and at the same time are giving it away - it is like auntie Anne, crying that she does not have enough money in her retirement to survive the winter, but spends most of her time in a casino... either shut up and enjoy your casino, because you got the money, or, pinch the penny, since you don't have enough and stay home... and the Pakistan... i am scared of the pakis more than Iran - the pakis have nukes, they are super corrupted, they don't like india, and india has nukes... scary!! seems that our money don't buy loyalty for us... is there a solution???

The US gets at least a few important things that I can think of (in theory... I can't comment on practice) for the money we spend:
(1) Less world sickness (that could come back and bite us otherwise). (2) as stated above, fewer wars. (3) more and larger markets in which to sell out goods. (4) more places where US citizens can travel and vacation in peace. (5) access to more raw materials. (6) less poluted atmosphere and water. (7) less of a chance of a nuke going off.
