Does anyone actually give a damn if the SMG in the M5 isn't the smoothest in auto mode?

Thanks for posting this.

It seems to me there's been a BMW backlash in the auto mags for the past 2 years or so. The placings don't matter to me very much. As stupid as this may sound, I actually read the road tests for the quality of writing. To me it takes a really creative writer to transform what could be very boring material into a stimulating review. That's why I like reading Dan Neil of the L.A. Times. He can make a Kia Sedona an interesting read.

We all know that the M5 is the choice among purists. It can be individualized by the owners in ways not possible with the Audi or MB. There's more to a car than a single subjective road test.

Well put.

It is interesting though, that between these three, they cover an entire spectrum of drivers by providing a rush in three distinct executions of power.

that's what idiots who do not understand what a sequential is thinks. It's not a auto so don't drive it a like an auto. After a little practice, you can be super smooth with SMG. I drove the CLS63. Was impressed but it still doesn't handle anything like the M5.. that's why I bought one.. The S6 is slow as molasses.. drove that too.

In a perfect world, I'll take the E63's engine/seats with the M5's body/handling :D

The suspension tuning is much better on the CLS63 that I drove. (pre-prod model) since my buddy is now an exec at MB. The E63 in comparison is not as well sorted out. the 6.2l motor is a marvel though. Fast/torquey, no fuss acceleration. Interior is very classy. Problem is you still got a torque convertor, no BT yet until next March, and Comand (older version still sucks). Also for almost 25K premium over the M5.. I took the M5.
