e60 m5's.. no wonder there are so much gain from the headers..
man.. looking at the factory design on the headers, explains pretty much why it gets such lousy gas mileage and sounds so damn whimpy. Can you say BMW purposely detuning the V10?
http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/sho...835#post841835 I see headers in my future! |
Those stock headers looked like they'd been run over by a Mack truck!

Interesting pipework. So your getting the new stuff as shown or something different?
|
supersprint is really the only option at this point.

I don't know a whole lot about exhaust design but the SS headers look like they aren't equal length whereas the OEM ones are. I'm assuming that keeping equal lengths on the tubing before the collector means each cylinder will see the same backpressure, which is good yes?

Josh, what do bimmer guys use to tune?
|
dyno? flow bench? no clue..

good question. The concern is the crimping which would really restricts flow. On the a couple of dyno runs, the headers show about a 35hp gain.

You need new headers for your M5;).

WoW - I surprised BMW accepted that design - disgusting! I would imaging a good set of headers would make for a significant improvement. Keep us posted!!!

mandrel bending is very expensive.. They probably said we met the crankshaft hp and torque targets and called it a day.

bosch, siemens.. already make a stand alone. Just gotta flash the code. It's not bush league/mickey mouse setup like the honduhs as the DME's built into BMW already track, can tune and control all functionalities.

Damn the stock exhaust manifold looks like shit. Dump those things for some headers immediately. As far as that design im not surprised at all. My E39 M5 and E36 M3 stock exhaust manifolds look like shit too. Very similar to the E60 and headers on my E39 also give 35hp like the E60 you have. And on my E36 headers give that about 25hp. The best stock M car manifold ive seen was on my E46 and even that wasnt that good but it was the best stock one ive seen on any Mcar before.

Wow. Obviously weren't too concerned about heat around the block.

Wow that ain't good...I wonder what the difference at the rear wheels on the dyno would be openned Superspint headers and some friendly jet hot coting?
|
would be bad.. lose too much back pressure.

Did you mean that with just header and no exhaust bolted on or with full exhaust. Because without the exhaust it would definately be no back pressure. But with full exhaust it should be fine |
read ljnlaw's post.

So I guess headers and exhaust and first on my list of mods when I get my E60. Im sure you will need a software upgrade for that kind of mod. does anyone make it yet for a car with exhaust mods. By the way are there any intake mods out yet. And whats up with that extra filter the NA cars get that the euros dont. Supposedly it gives like 10hp by removing it. Is this true and if so does removing it hurt anything and does anyone know why we have it and the euros dont
|
AA makes software. Works pretty well as I have it on mine. The charcoal filters don't do shit.. only there for emission reasons. I have them removed. With the both mods in place, pretty significants gains on the dyno on both HP and torque. Can't justify at the moment on spending 7G's on headers though.. The price will come down..

Of course I did not mean just throw on headers without an exhaust...however from what I understand from many in the bizz including Turner Motorsports, Metric Mechanic, etc. the place you create the most hp (from the engine to the pipes) is straight out of the engine (i.e. the headers) you are not going to get any real gains with an exhaust system. While I don't know anything about the M5 exhaust system other than what I have seen, these are the general rules: You have to create a way to get those hot gasses out as quickly and efficiently as possible. Headers and jet hot coating are not just BS they work...exhaust systems may sound great but they really don't do much for improvements in hp. Just my .02
|
here's the problem, yes header out will create HP, at the huge expense for torque. Replace with a better flowing exhaust with high flow cats will give you HP and torque improvements. The whole point of Jet Hot or any other exhaust wrap is the the exhaust itself to retain heat within the header so it can evacuate the hot gases better. (same as ceramic or inconel headers).
