5 series, why no HP?

What's BMW's rationale for keeping the 5 series so low in HP? (other than the M of course)....

What do you mean? 528-230hp, 535i-300 (more then the E350)
550i-360?

the 528 isn't a current model, neither is the 535i, at least they're not listed on the "build your own" on BMWUSA.

525i 215
525xi 215
530i 255
550 360

For a big 4 door sedan, that's not a lot of HP, with the exception of the 550.

(i'm just asking, i don't follow the 5 series much, i was bored a few days ago and built one out and was surprised at the low HP #'s)

What engines are in the '07's?

SANguru 01-17-2007 08:11 PM

there is no 528 or 535... not yet at least.

For me is not just a question of hp….
It's a question of torque!!:D
The real improvement in BMW engines (besides fuel economy and low emission specs) is TORQUE.:wow:
That’s just my opinion.;)

Europe is always ahead a year.

Yeah, it's 2008 in the US.

A 550i has some giddiyup considering it's moving 2 tons of mass. It's pretty damn fast for a mainstream sedan. It's definitely not underpowered. The inline sixes are better suited to the E90 platform, but they work well in the 5 series, so long as power is not the main criteria for buying one.

Well, that's my point, the 5 series' are big sedans and until the next models BMW had chosen to equip them with rather meagher engines. Comparing them to other sedans, they are underpowered.

SANguru 01-22-2007 01:48 AM

everything's underpowered compared to the Z06's! ;)

Yah, underpowered for Americans. They have a 630i coupe and a 730d in Europe, along with an 318i and even a X3 2.0i (which is admittedly, underpowered for even European standards). Seriously the 525i is only underpowered because the competition has more power for the buck. As long as you buy a manual 215hp is a non-issue unless you have some.........need to rack up speeding tickets.
