Clutch pedal question

What would cause a clutch pedal to suddenly stop working. In other words, you depress the clutch and it stays on the floor and obviously does not have any affect on the operation of the clutch itself. I don't think there is such a thing as a clutch cable linkage that could have broken? Could it be the input or output cylinders of the clutch control?

Oh and car is a E34 5-series. Thanks guys.
