Wonder if the new engine will have a number of technical gremlins. Hopefully they'll all be worked out by time the sedan is released.

G, good question. I was wondering wasn't the last 4.0 V8 in the E39?

GUINNESS 04-09-2007 03:51 PM

A 4.0 V8 was in the e39 540, e53 4.4, and I believe also in the 740. Can't remember if it was a 4.0 or not in the M5. I've heard it's a modified s62 engine, and I've heard it's the same engine in the current M5/6 minus 2 cylinders.

A 4.4 was in the 4.4 X5, the 2000 740 was a 4.4 the 4.0 was used in the 540 and M5 used a 4.9 (aka 5.0 V8). But I don't think BMW has made a 4.0 since then...not like it would share any of the same characteristics anyway :dunno:

Previous gen non-M BMW's used a 4.4L V8. The e39 M5's engine was 4.9L. The E90/92 M3 engine is a modified s62.

At least I got one thing right :)

The engine in M3 is a detuned engine from M5, V10 -2 cylinders. :)

The bugs will sure be worked out when sedan comes next year.;) They are shooting pics for M3 cabrio right now.
