Technical innovations that enhance the personal comfort and safety of vehicle occupants have always been at the heart of the endeavours of the BMW Group's engineers, and the car of the future will continue to adapt even more flexibly to the driver and his or her individual needs. In short, tomorrow's cars will be intelligent and connected to each other; they will recognise their drivers by face and adapt to who is behind the wheel; and they will be fully and wirelessly integrated into the digital world.

The car: a mobile multimedia centre
Thanks to the integration of digital mobile phones, DVD players, USB interfaces for MP3 music, Bluetooth for hands-free communication and large screens for fun, games and information, it is already possible to bring the digital infotainment world right into the car today. This year the BMW Group will even be introducing an integrated solution for series-produced cars to access the limitless World Wide Web. It appears that the world of consumer electronics is making unstoppable advances into the vehicle. The word "appears" is used advisedly because in order to integrate mobile devices, software updates and the latest web applications into the car in a meaningful way, there are a number of requirements which have to be met. Car-compatible controls, for example, which means they must be intuitive, ergonomically perfected and cause as little distraction as possible. Beyond wireless transmission technology, this requires an innovative and dynamic software architecture and the requisite development logic and methodology. In current research and development projects BMW Group works on, among other things, state-of-the-art dynamic HMI generation and transmission technologies such as wireless USB and Bluetooth audio streaming.

Individualisation and security by biometry
A pivotal factor in the unique levels of comfort on board a premium vehicle is the extent of individualisation. Apart from high-level quality and high-class looks, a leading role here is played above all by the personalisation options of the ergonomic, control, seat and infotainment functions, which can already be stored in luxury models today by means of the car key. In order to guarantee independence from the key and ensure the protection of personal data in the future, the BMW Group is conducting intensive research into the possibility of video-based personal identification. This biometric authentication process is based on the existing concept of key personalisation, yet can unequivocally identify and differentiate a large number of drivers by their distinctive facial features.

Customised owner's manual on the web
Occasionally there is no getting around consulting your owner's manual - for example in the case of less frequently used or entirely unfamiliar functions. But the inexorable rise in the number of functions and the high degree of personalisation offered by cars are increasingly pushing the printed manual to its limits. A far more convenient solution is one which the BMW Group is currently working on, namely a customised web-based owner's manual specifically adapted to the driver's individual vehicle. It will mean an end to footnotes like "only for versions with …" or complex tables with specifications covering all engine variants. The customer configures his vehicle at the order stage and at the same time the owner's manual is also configured.

Convenience call
Thanks to Remote Services, customers can for the first time remotely operate certain functions in their BMW. Regardless of how far away they are - whether from the warmth of their home or while on holiday in a different country - owners can simply phone the BMW call centre with a request to carry out certain functions in the car. Let's say you've checked in at the airport and suddenly you are unsure whether you really did lock the car: all it takes is a message to the BMW call centre and a member of staff will remotely lock the doors - but only after obtaining proof of your identity by means of security questions. And should you be unable to find your car in a strange city or a large car park, the vehicle finder function will locate its exact position. Remote Services also include remote climate control, which allows the interior of the car to be brought to a pleasant temperature before you get inside it - again simply by placing a call.
Keeping up with the latest technology in the future thanks to TeleProgramming

The TeleProgramming research project is investigating ways of offering drivers software updates for their BMW in the future, irrespective of the car's location. It opens up the prospect of the customer's vehicle being brought up to date with technological developments at any time - without the need for a service appointment - and throughout the lifecycle of the car. The customer would benefit from the BMW Group's technical innovations even after the car has been purchased. Another conceivable advantage of TeleProgramming would be the ability to retrofit an application at any time or to prevent the sporadic occurrence of malfunctions by means of a software update, all without having to seek out a BMW Service Partner. Furthermore, thanks to TeleProgramming the vehicle remains flexible in terms of developments in the consumer electronics device market. An additional enhancement might be a personalised customer portal on the internet, where the configuration status of the car could be viewed at any time and all service activities and updates would be recorded in detail. The customer would be able to find out about current features, the latest updates or service appointments for the car at any time.
