Summer Tires on Today

Put the 18" M wheels and summer tires on the 535i this afternoon. It snowed last night (1 cm) but it must be time for it to stop soon.

I ordered Axxis Deluxe pads front and rear from Zeckhausen (good service as always) and put those in at the same time. Took a little longer as the front calipers are larger but it was still straightforward. I didn't touch the rotors as I have only 6000 km on them. I wasn't going to play around cleaning the double-spoke wheels this summer.

75 minutes from the UPS truck arriving until bedding in the new pads.

Ordered a CDV at the same time, for the X3. Installing that will wait until next weekend.

Does the 535 not use a clutch line damper?

JCL 03-24-2008 11:50 PM

If it does use a CDV, it is not detectable, so there is no problem to fix. Clutch feel is great.

Zeckhausen don't list one, although they do list them for the 530 and the 550.

That's good news. Have a great summer, driving.

Summer tires on, that's gotta feel good. I am lucky. I get to leave the summer tires on all year. .

75 minutes is pretty fast. I did a full front and rear brake rotor and pad change over the weekend on the X5. It took nearly 5 freaking hours (including a lunch break). In my defense, it was my first time changing them on the X. Even figuring out small things such as how to jack the rear correctly took some time. Great articles on this site though. Helped out a lot.

I ordered my rotors from Zeckhausen and was also pleased with the service and fast delivery. I went with Centric plain rotors and Axxis XBG (PBR Metal Master) pads. They are in between the Delux and the Ultimates. I had to get the pads from Turner Motorsport.

Did you break in the pads with the repeated 60-10 mph stops as recommended? I did this and was thinking it may be overkill. It is almost impossible to find a stretch of road with no cars to repeat this process. Then trying not to come to a complete stop for 5-10 minutes while they cool is even harder.

I was aiming for an hour, but had a problem with one wear sensor clip, and the fact that the two guide bolts are different lengths on the front of the E60. Noticed that after I put the wrong one in. My 75 minutes included set up and jacking (hydraulic trolley jack, 2 jackstands), but no rotor replacement. Wheelbolts were torqued to 90 ft-lbs, 7 mm Allen bolts were done by hand. HT grease applied to all contact points on the pad ears. I have done a few brake jobs over the years. My brothers (the two professional mechanics) would have laughed because I don't have air tools.

I did a bedding-in procedure, but these pads required it less than the ones I put on the X5 a few years back. I may do another set, I will see how they go. I live on the side of a mountain, so I have nice straight hills to use for bedding in.

Dave at Zeckhausen would know better than me, but I don't worry too much about coming to a short stop as long as the pads aren't clamping the rotor while I am stopped.

Good to read you are urging on the season and ready, J!
That "75 minutes from the UPS truck arriving until bedding in the new pads",
is not exactly dwadling, either! A pair of cool cars...

Yep, it's the time of the year Jeff. I read your post and got the itch to put on my summer tires. One problem, I don't have any.

I will not buy summer shoes, I will not buy summer shoes :)

Hope Spring arrives soon for you.

Oh and for you Chairman and FSETH :slap:
