Off the wall oil filter question.
 

Do all the BMW 4.4 motors use the same oil filter? I ask because I have a Mann filter from my 4.4 X5 and I want to know if I can use it in the 4.4 in my 645.

That just seems odd since it is the exact same motor.

It may be the exact motor, but there's less room under the hood of a 6er. Therefore, packaging needs to adjust accordingly...ie different shape oil filter canister, etc...

Also, the application is different between the two, so the flow rate requirements are also different.

I respectfully disagree with the above information and reasoning. It has nothing to do with packaging, but it may have something to do with flow. A quick web search gave me the following:

In summary, it depends on the year of manufacture, not the chassis series. The 2004 got the new N62 engine with Valvetronic as I recall. Same filter for all V8s up until 2003, a different filter for models from 2004 onwards.

Use the above at your own risk, since not everything posted on the web is completely accurate (but I would chance it).

:iagree: Oil filter sizes won't ever be decided by packaging requirements. They're engineered for performance and reliability of the engine. More than flow, it's usually oil pressure that's the determining factor.
