Need your opinion on 98 M3

So I have a second car 2002 BMW 525i Sport & Premium package with 109k miles for sale right now on eBay - immaculate condition/everything perfect.
Today this guy contacted me and offered his 98 M3 as a trade. From the pictures it looks like awsome car with 124k He told me he has is for sale at $10700 which I thisnk is toooo much. I also asked for the service records.

I want to get around 9500 for my 525i.

What do you think - I'd like to trade but not sure how much cash to ask from him??? What would you do?

Here is a link to his car:

The E36 M3 is a good car. Fun to drive, at least as if not more reliable than the E39, and the 4 door version is more rare. Good color combo too. Odds are it's a 5 speed, but I'd double check to make sure as they were available in auto. The questions would be is he selling it because there is some big work needed soon?

The Estoril Blue and Dove Grey Interior are a great color combo! One of my favorites for the E36 M3's. Based on the asking price and the mileage similar M3's in my area are getting anywhere from $9K to $12K based on the condition, mods, etc.

I don't know what your E39 looks like, but you are going to be lucky to get $9,500 out of it. I had a 2002 530i Dinan S1 with 92,000 miles that came with 2 sets of OEM wheels and I was barely able to get $8,000 out of it. But I guess it depends on your market and finding the right buyer.

Anyways good luck!

It looks like this is Auto M3 but that is ok because my wife will be driving it. I also love the color combo.

Last week I got 9K offer on my 525 but decided not to sell :(

Now when I saw that M3 I really want it. Will see how the guy responds to all my questions. At NJ Manheim this M3 will be around 6K but its really hard to find that color combo.

Would be a nice addition to my grey/green X5 ;)

for those kind of savings you can be patient. that color combo will come through Manheim somewhere and you can have it shipped for cheap...

Philly......wow .....the M3 is a Beauty.....

I remember my Senior year in college ......that was the exact car that I had my eye on.....a fellow student had a 96 in white......2 door...just immaculate and awesome...

Decisions...decisions....

:yikes:

Yes, this car looks sharp:thumbup: I just hope the owner has service records for it.
If I get it will be my weekend toy:D

So what would you guys pay for such a car (with service records)???

i love that car. I had a 1994 Hellrot 325i (sold it only withy 75k miles to a fellow car enthusiast). the e36 are the best, very reliable. The only big problems i had with my e36 was the AC was constantly being fixed. Otherwise, mechanically it was great!

heres a picture of what it looks like now with its new owner:

Now you guys are really making me miss my old 325is I sold to a friend of mine... Not only does he still owe me $2000 on it but he wrecked the front end just bad enough to need a bumper, hood radiator support and condensor.......... I miss the old girl, black interior, 5 speed w/fidanza lightweight aluminum flywheel and M3 clutch, M3 front bumper (old one was cracked) full stainless exhaust including long tube headers, dinan chip and CAI intake, 18" black center wheels from lakeshorewheelandtire.com, black housing LED tails etc. etc. etc.

weasel, nice 325. those cars are the best

Weasel 09-23-2009 09:41 PM

If I hadn't bought the X5 I'd still be driving it. Man do I miss driving that little thing. I can't wait till my friend has the money to fix it so I can drive it again. (I will be doing the work on it to)

same here, i had to get into somthing bigger and safer...

my parents bought that 325 in 1994 with 10 miles on it! it was the first car i washed, first car i waxed, the car i learned how to drive stick shift on...i miss that thing so much. The guy who bought it luckily has taken great care of it..i'm really happy about it

Philly X5 09-23-2009 11:13 PM

Ok, so here is the main question - would you trade 02 525i in perfect like new condition, with 109K miles, sport & premium package for 98 BMW M3 with 124k miles in exceptional condition too...:stickpoke
I cannot decide.

Weasel 09-24-2009 01:47 AM

They are both nice cars, I put my mom in a 528i a couple years back. They are both worth about the same, the 5 worth about $1k more but the M3 more of a collectors car so it can pull more in a sale. I'd likely do the trade asking the guy with the M3 if he would cover the title swap costs. Just check on the service records and pay attention to the transmission when you test drive... don't want to find out he was selling to avoid costly problems.

you can probably call into the dealer too and have them check the VIN, although they cant release the records to you, they will be able to see if there is a reoccurring problem.

Philly X5 09-24-2009 01:59 PM

Sorry guys, looks like No deal. After I asked for the Vin# he changed his mind to sell. Later I got another email from him - he wants my car + $2000 cash for his... PASS

Philly X5 10-21-2009 12:03 AM

Update... He emailed me again - $10K for that M3
I really like that car but $10K??? Manheim has them for around 7-8 K but his color is amazing:yikes: He also provided CarFax - its clean.

So what do you think - should I give him 9K and have a nice toy in my garage next to X ?:D
