Hi all. I am truely sorry for hijacking the E53 forum but I am desperate in finding a solution!!

I am having some difficulty with a all of a sudden problem?

My car was recently on a workshop having some things done among ones dropped the tranny.

But in some mysterious way it developed a problem after I got it back. The symptoms are that it has a very weird engine "noise". But it is only audible from inside the cabin, with the windows closed. The sound follows engine rev. They had the car back 4 times and cannot see they done anything wrong even though it WASNT there before they got it.

Its very hard to descripe the sound its a mix of vanos rattle/diesel sound/ valve ticker? (it sound like a wheel of fortune spinning with the motor) ..

I know its not the vanos. (checked the sound from there and changed to beisansystems a year ago.)

The engine had low oil (missing 1.7 liter). But no lights were on, I know they work because I regular fill a liter once and a while. I drive many kilometer.. several thousand per month. So I dont know if this excessive use is normal, but its been like that since I bought the car 2½ years ago.

The car had been in this workshop rechecking everything they did 4 times!!! yes .. 4 times.. they can NOT see any mistakes besides they dident work on the engine only tranny. Besides the stater now cranks perfect after last re-check at the shop. The engine noise however persists.

WHAT can cause this sound / noise? Can it have ANYTHING to do with oil, oil pressure, or ?

I just find it strange I suddenly develops while at repair. .. . .

The shop has a theory but I dont know:

They say that due to low oil in engine, and tranny removed.. It is possible the engine is tilted and oil would forward away from maybe various components - I personally find this strange. But I dont know? They did refill it. I driven carefully the car for atleast 50km ... still the same... I changed the valvecover gasket today also confirming that sparkplugs and chain tensioner look perfect.

Im on a rental car and truely desperate!! !

Please help and advice..

Lasse

I hear that clattering sound but I'm not familiar with that motor. Try searching through google if not e46 fanatics.

they should secure a heatshield only accessible when tranny / exhaust dropped.

and on E46 there is something called sticky 5th gear. Some bushings and springs you can access and change from outside tranny when droped. But I dont suspect transmission for any of this.

It could be a possibility, I will go and check right away althoug I dont think thats the one.. There is no rattle when I look at engine bay and another person throttles up.. but its worth double checking.
