Nice looking paint scheme.

Since you bring up the 3.0 CSL, and since IMO they are one of the most iconic BMW models ever built......

I never got to see a CSL on the road, to my recollection. 3.0 CS models were beautiful, but the CSL would have been even better. I did get to work on, and drive, various customer 2002s, and at least one 3.0 CS. I remember replacing a starter motor on it, among the things. The 3.0 CSL was something extra special though:
  • First M model ever (though they weren't called the M division then).
  • Built as homologation specials just so BMW and privateers could go racing, against Porsche 911s and Ford Capris.
  • Lightened up, with no air conditioning, sound deadening, power windows, etc, in most models. Some options could be factory ordered, for the poseurs.
  • The wing came shipped loose in the trunk, since it wasn't street legal in some locations.
  • Not built by BMW, but my Karmann, for BMW
  • The first BMW art cars were 3.0 csl models
Just to consider how far we've come since then, the original 3.0 CSL had 180 hp (a little less than our recent E46 325 had), carburetors, 14 x 7 wheels, and a 4 speed manual transmission. Final race versions ended up way above those power levels.

Beautiful cars. I always wanted one, but would have happily settled for a 3.0 CS. I think I would take one over a 1 series M coupe now.
