Can I use e53 X5 4.6 rotors?
I have an 03 4.4 with the following options:
S226A SPORTLICHE FAHRWERKSABSTIMMUNG Sports suspension settings S255A SPORT-LEDERLENKRAD Sports leather steering wheel S312A LM RAEDER MIT MISCHBEREIFUNG BMW LA wheels with mixed tires P330A SPORTPAKET Sports package These are on my local CL: 356x36 MM for BMW X5 4.6-4.8 L engine Can I use them? |
from my understanding, the rears on the iS models are ventilated, and the fronts are bigger that regular, hence the requirement for 18" wheels minimum (even a spare is at 19")... the rears on the regular E53 are not ventilated, and the cross check in realoem does not match those rotors back to regular X...
i would say - no... but, as always, you better check with somebody who knows this... :) |
I think for 140 it's worth looking at them.
My X has 19 inch rims so from that perspective not a problem. If I decide to look/get them I'll report my findings. Thanks! |
do you know the manufacturer of those rotors? i am a cheap skate myself but certain things should be of established quallity - brakes being one of those things...
sometimes a foot shaven off braking distance makes a lot of difference |
I sent a message asking the seller. I agree savings is good but have learned cheap rotors suck. I had no name rotors on my G37S caliper equipped 350Z that were warped in under 2000 miles.

I just did my best to measure the rotors with the rim on and came up over 14 inches.
356mm= 14.0157. |
He responded Meyle. I asked for pictures. That is a quality brand no?
|
He finally got me pictures. They are a Centric brand.

I was under the impression to use the 4.6 rotors on the 4.4's you have to use the carriers/calipers as well. Is that incorrect as I was wanting to do this upgrade as well.
|
I'm fairly certain the calipers and carriers are different, hell, if I could just put bigger rotors on my 3.0 I would! Would love to have increased stopping distance.
Those look like nice aftermarket replacement rotors, nothing special about them. But you have to be sure they work. |

nice catch!!! |
Lowblock has the right of it. To fit the 4.6iS rotors you needed the calipers & carriers due to the increased diameter.
|
Thinking about it some, would standard calipers bolt on to 4.6is carriers?
That could open up a world of possibilities...4.6is calipers on standard rotors, or 4.6is rotors using 4.6is carriers and standard calipers? |
Use realoem to cross reference

I just checked the caliper housing of a 4.6is caliper and it is used by the 4.8is AND euro 4.4i...so it looks like euro 4.4's can upgrade to bigger discs with a carrier and disc swap! Off to cross reference other parts... |
Hmmm...cross referencing some more...some euro 4.4i X5's come with 4.6/4.8is front brakes, complete with larger discs.
US non-iS models whether 6 or 8cyl share the same brakes, shared with E38's and E39's. No easy iS retrofits for us non-iS owners, you need to swap over calipers, carriers, and discs to play. On the other hand, time to look at E39- market brake upgrades, there might be some good ones there that fit E53's too. |
when you do a cross reference that also includes euro models, in addition to the realoem.com, you can use realoem.lv - that is a latvian counterpart to the real oem, but it is loaded with some parts that are exclusive to euro market, and not loaded even into the euro search on the regular real oem...
