Happy Inauguration

Happy Inauguration weekend everyone! Is anyone traveling to DC for the festivities? If so be warned all bridges from VA are already closed, the Mall is now lined with port-a-johns, and there was a gang of guys committing armed robberies down 14th street throughout the night. Gotta love DC....

Wagner 01-18-2009 11:16 AM

this will be a fiasco for at least a week. Can't wait to hear the complaints of "there was only 5000 pjs..." and "..the city should have been better prepared". Maybe we'll even get a lawsuit or two out of it ;)

That said, all in all..it should be an amazing time down there!

jwilburn 01-18-2009 11:19 AM

Yeah my car is filled with gas. I have charged my phone, and ready for a quick exit.

However if it does go well, I cannot wait to see Beyonce et all at the Neighborhood Ball on Tues night!

I am a very proud American, the Inauguration will be a night for the history books.

Lets all hope he does a great job.

SO why would you need to make a quick exit? Am I missing something?

ylwjacket 01-18-2009 01:46 PM

this is a yawner for me. i will be at work,a dn i won't watch it on tv, nor listen on the radio. i'm sure when it's over, i'll see some highlights.

Sad...150 million dollar party and I'm sure the costs don't end there. I can't be there but I'll be paying for the event so enjoy.

Here is the real story. The cost is 45 million compared to Bush's 43.5 million 4 years ago. STOP WATCHING FOX NEWS!!!

Wagner 01-19-2009 09:09 AM

MLG, eh...it is what it is. All inaugurations are expensive. I'm really OK with that, what I'd really like to read is Wednesday morning " OBAMA SIGNS A LAW ALLOWING FOR STEM CELL RESEARCH"...but he already punked out and said let the legislative body decide...equates to a vote of PRESENT in my book :(

And it will cost more than the 45M..but who cares?

realchef 01-19-2009 10:22 AM

YAY socialism!!

time to get it over with and get a government job

How about ABC News reported today (link below)? You seem to be suggesting that Obama is only spending 2.5 million dollars more than Bush when in reality Obama's event is much larger by design.

BTW...Love the fact that the largest donors are from Wall Street.

No, I'm saying half of the country voted for him, and half didn't. Europe was euphoric, because they hate conservatives.

So, you, the half of the country that voted for him, and the Europeans may have "hope".

However, there is still a large portion of the country who is not caught up in the rhetoric, and has a wait-and-see attitude.

So, you can not make statements like "everyone has more hope in their lives". Obama has very little, if anything, to do with how much "hope", whatever that means, that I personally have in my life.

I hope the guy does well. He seems to be off to a reasonable start. But there is not much that he will do that gives, or takes away, hope from my life.

Is that clearer?

I guess whilst I'm at it, I will add that, quite frankly, it scares me a little that someone with so much inexperience can be elected to the highest office in the world on the basis of celebrity status alone. This man now commands the mightiest military, presides over the largest economy, and holds the title of Most Powerful Man in the World. He earned all of that based on a speech he gave at a convention 4 years ago, when he was still a State Senator. Yikes.

But, we hashed all that out back in November, and I am trying to move on.

I concede these points, but these are hardly Presidential qualifiers.

As I said, I am trying to move on. In the meantime, I am tense and braced for a crash, like when the driver of a car you are in decides to gas it for a yellow light, and you are not sure if you will come out safe on the other side, or if you will get smashed in the middle.

Today is going to be an interesting day in the south. We have a mostly liberal faculty, while the student base and staff is conservative (I consider myself moderate, if not independent). The southern rednecks who have Robert E. Lee on their wall at their house are probably going to take a day of mourning.

Who, the one with 180 minutes left, or the one with four years? But then again, nobody kicks a dead dog, which Georgie was a few years ago.

Sorry, but these posts, separate or together, are asinine. In the first, you are generalizing and bigoted.

In the second, calling the POTUS Satan's offspring - I don't even have words for that.

If I used similar phrases for Obama, I would be kicked out for being racist. This cuts both ways.

You need to tighten up your rhetoric.

I'm calling Cheney satan's offsping first of all. Freedom of speech, and I'm definately not the first person to say that. I said the George Bush has been a lame duck (and even conservative media has come out and said it) for a LONG time. what would the point of bashing him be.

I will absolutely make fun of southern rednecks as long as they bash us "yankees" for "ruining our government" and I think a dixie flag plastered on your F-250 qualifies you as a "southern redneck" especially when you threaten someone based off anything, be it their race, the way they talk or where they're from. I have posted about the bullshit that happened after he got elected, ALL have been tied to this group of people and I'm pretty sure one made national news about our small school in south carolina.

Anyone who makes racial comments is an idiot. Or from here. I've never heard the "n" word used so frequently. I, personally would never say it.

chill the frig out.

EDIT: (YOU= not you specifically, how about we say "some person" instead)

Just as bad as saying it about Bush. Just because you have freedom of speech, doesn't mean someone else can't call BS when you cross the line.

too rambling and incoherent to make sense.

not sure what the "Dixie flag" is, or why it was referenced. also, i don't think i am driving a ford pickup truck, and i don't recall threatening anyone.

you mean to tell me they don't make fun of southern accents in NY? you should of heard the abuse heaped on me when I ordered grits in NYC while I was in HS. that was my welcome to NY, and it didn't much for me. haven't been since, and i sure wouldn't have gone to college there.

I try not to read threads from people whose views differ from mine; I try not to get involved with political or religious threads.... but HOLY SHIT, PEOPLE! Chill the fuck out! How can one thread saying "Happy Inauguration" turn into this...?

Can we not POSSIBLY celebrate that for the 44th in our nation's history, we've had a peaceful transfer of power to a DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED President? By the way, a feast not achieved by ANY OTHER COUNTRY in the world?!? Regardless of whether you're a democrat, republican, libertarian, THIS very day should be something we can celebrate -- without fighting.

Why is it SO hard for us to celebrate something about which we should be SO proud without bashing each other?

I don't get it, people... I truly don't. We act like SUCH high-schoolers sometimes.

Thank you. That's all I'm saying. Regardless of your political views, we are SO unique in this regard. For more than 230 years, we've had peaceful transitions of power of (and this is even more important) democratically-elected presidents.

We are such a young country, yet we're the oldest democracy in the world. Let's celebrate that very fact, and put away our bickering -- even if it's just for one day. :)

Obama's inauguration speech was good, albeit a sign of how things are. I sincerely hope that we can get to the heights he speaks of, and maybe we can actually work together, rather than bitching at one-another.

Sorry for using inflammatory adjectives, was simply trying to make a point that today would be interesting, but I have been pleasantly suprised that even the strongest haters are being respectful and also saying "I hope we can work towards this common goal." We have one, too now.

It's unfortunate and frankly sad that negative comments keep coming.
No matter how people voted he's your commander in Chief.
Would it be asking too much to respect the office and
at least give this man a chance to do his job?

Lighten up! I never said he wasn't my commander in chief. You think I don't know that? How am I not giving this man a "chance to do his job"??? I volunteered to serve my country (and him) overseas for 6 months missing the holidays with my family and now my uncles funeral tomorrow. I volunteered knowing he was going to be my CINC. For 25 years I've respected "the office" and served this country through multiple wars. Unless you've also served this country you are in no position to ask me to respect the office which I have surely done.

Just relax, everyone is entitled to their own opinion as to how qualified he is/ interpreting his record / what kind of dog he will get / what he should read while in the "office".

Kaefer- Were you there? It must have been freezing cold out! It was incredible to see so many people on the mall there. I have a friend who woke up at 3 just to get into the crowd, it sounds like an incredible experience.

If Lamb is waiting on Palin to be Pres, he will be serving much longer than 4 more years.

Sorry, back to the fun....

The real burning question is - is he keeping the blackberry? I don't know how they can secure it, but maybe they can. Maybe they need to give him a fake one to wean with.

Nope. I read somewhere that secret service does not allow that. All BB messages are through RIM SERVERS.

brian5 01-20-2009 04:32 PM

I don't think the big issue with the BB is encryption as there is a BB version that uses AES-256 encryption which is approved by the Defense Dept for sensitive communications. Also, the GPS is not an issue as that feature can be turned off.

I think the risk of hacking the presidential PDA is high though -- no encryption can solve that. The BB has at least 14 documented vulnerabilities. How would anyone know that the email that they receive actually came from Obama. Without strong authentication, no one will know for sure. I think that it would be prudent for him NOT to use internet email while he is in office.

I can understand giving-up a PDA, but no email on a computer?

X5rolls 01-20-2009 07:19 PM

No email means plausable deniability. Or at least a better chance of achieving it if ever needed.

LeMansX5 01-20-2009 07:21 PM

Some issues with BB are
The Presidential Records Act requires retention of the bulk of documents generated by the president for public review at a later date, so any message Obama creates with his BlackBerry would have to be retained and stored, subject to scrutiny in the future. But the larger problem is that the BlackBerry is unlikely to get the nod as the presidential wireless handheld from the National Security Agency

Risk of hacking the presidential PDA is high and in any event, it is not possible to have absolute certainty that e-mail actually came from Obama

Why Obama Should Keep His BlackBerry -- But Won't

John Lennon is rolling over in his grave right now. I cant believe that hippie brought that sighn out. LOLZ

Well I know for Sec of State, and would assume the same for the President, that they cannot have email. When Condi was working everything was done by printed paper and for the most part she did not have a computer much less an email address like [email protected].

Also I am quite amazed how this thread turned out. To bring it back to point, it was a very exciting weekend in DC! I saw Jay Z at the local mall coming out of some random store, and then again last night when he gave us a strange look for looking at him at the Neighborhood Ball. Faith Hill however could not have been more nice...or more pretty...and came up and spoke with us and shook my hand right before singing! It was an awesome night to see so many performers much less Obama and Biden in the same night!!!

FUNNY FACTS ABOUT BARAK OBAMA:

My favorite was:
Quote:

Big government is like a thousand foot fishing line with a hook, but efficiency is always an inch beyond the hook. Every time you realize this, Obama wants you to believe that the government must grow an inch bigger.

Why is a junior senator more qualified than a governor?
